Lighthouse Program for Grieving Children
www.grievingchildrenlighthouse.org
The Lighthouse Program for Grieving Children provides peer support groups for children (ages 3 to 12), teens (ages 13-18) and the primary caregivers of children. We do not provide counseling or therapy. In our program, participants are given the opportunity to meet with peers who have also experienced the death of a parent, primary caregiver, sibling, or close teen friend. All peer support groups are led by extensively trained volunteer facilitators supervised by professional staff. The death of a loved one is a time of crisis and, if handled with caring and support, can become a process of growth. Supporting children and teens in their experience of grief by providing a safe place to verbalize their difficult feelings and thoughts will prevent the development of unhealthy forms of expressing their grief. Often, family members wish to "protect" each other from their grief. Children and teens find they can comfortably express their feelings when they are with peers who have also experienced the death of a family member. This expression of feelings and thoughts helps them reach an understanding of their loss and healing.
