Brief History of Senior Tamils Society of Peel A preliminary meeting was held among the Tamil Seniors on April 24, 1999 and followed by the first inaugural meeting on May 24, 1999, at Yarl Cooperative building in Mississauga, attended by 79 seniors who showed keen interest in the formation of the society. A constitution was drafted and adopted at the subsequent meeting held on March 15, 2000. The society was registered as Not �For Profit organization. ( Reg # 1406004). This was the brain child of few seniors who felt that there was a need for a Society to be formed to look after the needs of the Tamil Seniors in the Peel Region to enable them to settle down and integrate within the Canadian community. The Society is guided by a Constitution which is amended by Resolutions approved at the Annual General Meetings held in the last week of May each year. Members are, who are 50 years and older, whereas Associate members are 35 to 49 years old. The Associate members are entitled to all privileges except voting rights at the meetings. Current member ship fee for Individual member is $ 20.00 and for husband and wife is $ 30.00. For Associate members $ 15.00 and husband and wife is $20.00. Life member pays $ 150.00 for Individual and $ 200.00 for husband and wife. Total membership on roll: 958 6. Mission Provide inclusive and interactive, and accessible social, recreational and health promotional programs with dignity and respect for older adults ( 50 +) to reduce isolation, improve the health and well-being and to empower them to lead meaningful and connected lives in which they are engaged and participating in the community. 8.
