The Canadian Heritage Photography Foundation
The Canadian Heritage Photography Foundation (CHPF) is a Canadian non-profit organization located in Mississauga. The principal goal of the CHPF is to collect, preserve, digitize archival holdings and make the archive available to students, researchers and the Mississauga community. The archive connects people with Canadian history through the promotion and preservation of photography. In 2001, long time based Mississauga photographer and 2014 Mississauga Legends Row inductee George Hunter founded the CHPF with the vision to preserve the work of important Canadian photographers. After his death in 2013, Hunter bequeathed over 100,000 prints, negatives, slides and ephemera to the Foundation. The Hunter collection is an invaluable resource of rich Canadian historical photographs, including his ground breaking aerial photography from the 1950's, his iconic images of Canadian industry, Inuit and First Nations communities and Canadian life and times. The Foundation is actively collecting materials to diversify the archive with recent acquisitions of contemporary photography and early 20th century images. The works of 7 additional photographers have been added to the collection which now totals some 150,000 items. CHPF is a unique archive with a sole focus on photography as a reflection of cultural heritage. The Foundation is not linked with a formal municipal, provincial or federal body, but instead relies on private and government grants to operate.
