Goal

Indus Community Services (Indus) is an accredited, not-for-profit community benefit organization that has served local communities for 40 years. The agency is a registered charity supported by its donors and by all three levels of government.

Indus, through its professional staff of 140+ personnel, are leaders in providing culturally appropriate services to newcomers, families, women and seniors.

The Gold Seal indicates that our services and programs meet the highest international standards and are an indication of the organization’s dedication and commitment to improving the quality of the lives of people served.

The Board of Indus is made up of dedicated volunteers who are committed to supporting the needs of the communities we serve. It is comprised of visionary individuals from all backgrounds who contribute to our vision, mission and strategic plan.

Indus’s board is a governance board and provides leadership and oversees the activities of the organization. The board does not does not manage the day-to-day operations of the organization. Directors are asked to support fundraising efforts both personally and within their networks.

Our nominations process is open from December to March annually. If you are interested in bringing your proven governance experience and commitment to community, we would like to learn more about you. 


Description

  • Commit to the vision, mission and guiding values of the organization.
  • Participate in the on-going development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Attend monthly Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting.
  • Serve on at least one Board Committee.
  • Strong networking and communication skills.
  • Have previous experience leading business or social organizations, and/or serving on a Board.
  • Have a strong understanding of the needs of the communities the organization serves.
  • Integrity and commitment to represent the best interests of the organization.
  • Adhere to the organization’s governance policies, procedures & bylaws.

To be eligible all applicants must be or become a member of Indus by March 31, 2025.

Competencies Required

Board Terms

As per Indus Bylaws, a Board Member position is for a 3-year term with a maximum of 2 consecutive terms. We are currently seeking to fill one vacancy on the Board.

Timelines

  • March 31st, 2025 --- Applicants to submit their completed Application Form, resume and Membership Form (if applicable) to Indus.
  • April 7th - 16th, 2025 --- The Governance Committee meets with the applicants and prepares a slate.
  • April 17th or May 15th, 2025 --- Applicants invited to attend a Board meeting as an observer.
  • Week of May 19th, 2025 --- Applicants selected for the slate will be notified by the Chair.
  • May 27th, 2025 --- AGM notice, agenda, minutes of last year's AGM and recommended slate will be mailed out to the membership. Profile of each applicant on the slate will be enclosed.
  • June 16th, 2025 Applicants approved for the slate to provide police record search. ***
  • June 19th, 2025 Approval of the recommended slate/elections to the Board at the AGM.
  • *** As part of our screening process, Indus requires all volunteers of the organization to complete a Police Records Search/Criminal Records Search from an authorized Police Service (the city you reside in). Should you be selected for the slate, you will be required to provide the results of the search to the organization by June 16th, 2025.

Time Commitment
This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment starting 2025-06-19 AND ending 2028-06-15
Shifts are available on the following days
 - Thursday Evening

MONTHLY Board Meetings & committee meetings, as scheduled (typically on a Thursday Evening)
ATTENDANCE at the AGM (and INDUS events)


Training

ORIENTATION to Indus Community Services is provided to all incoming Board Members, and successful candidates will receive TRAINING about our policies and procedures.
