Goal

The goal of the Bike Fix-Up and Give-Away Day is to promote sustainable transportation, foster community engagement, and provide individuals in need with access to safe and functional bicycles. Through this event, we aim to empower participants by offering bike repairs and maintenance assistance, encouraging active transportation, and facilitating the donation of refurbished bikes to residents especially in the Cooksville area. By fostering a sense of community and promoting the benefits of cycling, we strive to create a more environmentally friendly and inclusive neighborhood where everyone can enjoy the freedom and health benefits of biking.


Description

FREE Bike Fix-Up and Give-Away Day is a community event hosted by Heart Comonos, in collaboration with Mississauga Cycles, Peel Multicultural Council, Cycle without age, Roll Cooksville and supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation and City of Mississauga. Taking place on Saturday, June 21st, from 10 am to 1 pm at 67 Hillcrest Avenue in Mississauga, right next to Bawadi Cuisine & Lounge.

This event aims to bring together cycling enthusiasts, volunteers, and residents of Cooksville for a day of bike repairs, maintenance, and bike giveaways. Participants will have the opportunity to receive assistance from professional bike repair technicians and to engage with the Cooksville community in order to experience sustainable transportation and community well-being. This is a fun-filled day celebrating cycling, Bike Rodeo, Giveaways, games and bike decorations. Refreshments and drinks will be served.

Volunteer Positions (No special skill required) :

Bike Rodeo Volunteers (4 volunteers):

  • Ensuring safety gear is used by the riders
  • Collecting signed permission/waiver forms
  • Ensuring riders follow the safe path

Setup/Clean-up Crew (6 volunteers): 

  • Set up cones, signs, tables, and tents before the event
  • Take down and store all materials afterward
  • Collect trash and lost items, using garbage bags and pickers.

Registration Area (4 Volunteers):

  • Signing up attendees for the event
  • Assisting attendees in navigating with-in the event
  • Providing more information to the people about the event and Heart Comonos
  • Providing water/drinks for hydration.
  • assisting with First Aid if required. 

Announcement Area/ Giveaways (2 Volunteers): 

  • Assisting our team in making time- to time announcements.
  • Assisting in Giveaways and announcing Raffle ticket winners.

 

Spinning Wheel: (2 volunteers)

  • one to monitor the spinning of the wheel
  • one to hand out the prize/monitor the line up

 

Games Area (2 Volunteers):

  • Setting up outdoor games for attendees to play
  • Supervising and ensuring safety of the players

 

Line Control Crew (6 Volunteers):

  • Welcoming and assisting attendees to Navigate through the event.
  • Ensuring that there is no cutting or overcrowding at bike tune-up area
  • Guiding attendees to park their vehicles/ bikes at designated spots.
  • going down the lineup for repairs, and separating those who only need air in their tires 
  • pumping up tires 
  • providing bottles of water to those in the line up, if it's really hot out. 

 

Bike Decoration Area (2 Volunteers):

  • Helping attendees in decorating their bikes with props/stickers
  • Supervising the area and ensuring safety of the attendees

 

Bike Display/Traffic Area : (4 Volunteers):

  • Maintain a clear path and ensure participant safety during the raffle game
  • Ensure all bikes are properly numbered and positioned on bike racks or in designated spots.
  • help explain how the raffle will work
  • attaching the ticket boxes to the bikes securely
  • ensure no one gets on the bikes/takes one away 

Bike Mechanic Assistants (2 Volunteers):

  • Assisting bike mechanics and making minor repairs & adjustments
  • Conducting basic safety bike inspections as per the guidance of the bike mechanics.

*Please note: Volunteers signing up for this area must have prior experience with bike repairs and will be required to undergo a mandatory on-site screening conducted by the lead mechanic.

They play a crucial role in enhancing the overall experience for participants, fostering a sense of connection and well-being. By participating at our Bike Fix-Up and Give-Away Day event volunteers can showcase their skills and passion for cycling while helping others. Volunteers also gain valuable hands-on experience in event community engagement. Volunteers have the chance to connect with like-minded individuals, build new relationships, and expand their network within the community.

    Volunteer hours will be provided.


    Qualifications

    Everyone is welcomed to volunteer from the age of 14 and above with a variety of skill sets, Those who are under the age of 18 are required to fill out and sign a permission form by a parent or guardian. Link for the online form : https://form.jotform.com/241845098446264

    All Volunteers are REQUIRED TO ATTEND A ZOOM ORIENTATION on June 13th 2025 at 6:30 pm to 7:30pm ( Zoom link will be provided via email).

    All volunteers are required to be available and on time on event day (June 21st, 2025 at 8am-3pm).

    Time Commitment
    This is a Special Event commitment starting 2025-06-21 AND ending 2025-06-21
    Shifts are available on the following days
     - Saturday Morning, Saturday Afternoon

    Training

    All Volunteers are REQUIRED TO ATTEND A ZOOM ORIENTATION on June 13th 2025 at 6:30pm to 7:30pm ( Zoom link will be provided via email).
