Goal

Roots Community Services (RootsCS) is committed to strengthening and enhancing the quality of life of families and individuals, by providing culturally sensitive programs, support, resources, education and training. The goal of the online tutoring position is to teach literacy/numeracy skills (improving levels of competence and confidence) in youth ages 6 - 16 years, in the Region of Peel who require additional homework/school support. It is our hope to accomplish this through the support given by caring, understanding, and committed individuals who will take on the role of Volunteer Online Tutor. Be a part of educating and motivating our leaders of tomorrow!

As a tutor you will provude a safe and enriching environment to help students achieve their desired academic goals in an applicable subject. Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge/skills the Ontario curriculum (Grades 1 to 11) will be considered a definite ASSET
  • Commitment/experience working with children/youth (ages 6 - 16) also an ASSET
  • Excellent oral/written English (fluency in other languages welcome)
  • Friendly, engaging (with listening skills, empathy, and patience appropriate for tutoring children)
  • Appreciation for diversity and inclusiveness in your community
  • Critical thinking and research skills 
  • Relationship building skills 
  • Efficient computer skills (Google platforms, education games, etc)
  • Vulnerable Sector Check if you are over the age of 18 years 
  • Minumum age requirement is 15 years old 
  • In order to promote continuity in the tutoring program, we PREFER a VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT for the duration of the 'school year' (AT LEAST 3-4 MONTHS)

Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment starting 2024-11-18 AND ending 2025-06-20
Shifts are available Anytime

TUTORING will be virtual (online) and can be in a group or 1:1, during AFTERNOON's and EARLY EVENING's. Tutoring (school support) sessions parallel the 'school year' and we request that applicants for the role be prepared to commit for more than 6 months, ideally for the whole of the school year, in order to promote continuity and consistency in the tutoring process.
*** Please note that time commitments may shift, based upon tutors' prep time, if applicable.


Training

You will recieve an orientation and onboarding prior to starting your assignment.
