Goal

Purpose:

Friendly Visitor Volunteers provide social connection and companionship to multiple residents during a shift. Each shift, volunteers receive a list of residents who would benefit from a visit. By offering conversation, simple activities, and a supportive presence, volunteers help reduce isolation and improve residents’ quality of life.


Description

Key Responsibilities:

Friendly Visitor Volunteers will:

  • Review the assigned list of residents at the start of the shift.
  • Visit each resident on the list, offering conversation and companionship.
  • Engage residents in simple activities (e.g. reading aloud, puzzles, music, reminiscence, looking through magazines or photo albums).
  • Provide quiet presence when residents prefer quiet company.
  • Observe and report changes in residents’ mood, engagement or well-being to staff.
  • Respect resident preferences (e.g., if a resident does not want a visit that day, the volunteer moves on to the next person on the list).

Qualifications

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Friendly, approachable, and compassionate
  • Good listening and interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable engaging with residents of varied abilities, including those with dementia
  • Flexible and adaptable (each visit may look different)
  • Reliable and able to maintain consistent attendance
  • Able to push a wheelchair
  • Have strong English language skills - verbal and written (additional languages may be beneficial)
  • Respectful of confidentiality and professional boundaries
  • Police check and TB check required

Time Commitment
This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment starting 2025-11-10
Shifts are available on the following days
 - Monday Morning, Monday Afternoon, Tuesday Morning, Tuesday Afternoon, Wednesday Morning, Wednesday Afternoon, Thursday Morning, Thursday Afternoon, Friday Morning, Friday Afternoon, Saturday Morning, Saturday Afternoon, Sunday Morning, Sunday Afternoon

Shifts are 3-3.5 hours, once per week.

Available shift times:

  • 9am to 12pm
  • 1pm to 4pm

Training

Training Provided:


  • Orientation to volunteering in a long-term care home

  • Dementia awareness and communication skills

  • Privacy, confidentiality, and boundaries

  • Infection prevention practices

 

New Volunteer Orientation Session:


  • Orientation is run once per month on a Saturday morning - date to be determined.
