Goal

COSTI is looking for volunteers to support its Hostel Services program. This role offers a hands-on learning opportunity for volunteers interested in social services, community development, and refugee support.


Description

Expected tasks: 

  • Support the delivery of orientation, programs, and daily services for residents.
  • Conduct admissions and intakes for new arrivals, ensuring all house rules are communicated and followed.
  • Complete all required documentation in COSTI’s and funders’ databases, including welcome packages, admission files, and incident reports
  • Manage administrative tasks such as sorting and distributing mail, answering phones, and responding to client inquiries
  • Maintain the smooth operation of the Centre by responding to emergencies, conducting wellness and room checks, and providing de-escalation support during non-violent crises (e.g., client disputes or family conflicts).
  • Provide emergency assistance during medical situations, including contacting paramedics when needed.
  • Communicate promptly and professionally with supervisors and hotel management regarding any client issues or concerns.
  • Offer interpretation services as required.

Qualifications

Qualification 

  • Good communication skills.
  • Understanding of issues facing refugees and populations experiencing homelessness.
  • The ability to speak a second language is helpful. Preference will be given to those who speak Yoruba, Spanish, Farsi, and French
  • Experience working with refugees is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Willing to provide a valid Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) Police check.

Additional Information 

  • This is an unpaid volunteer position. 

  • Must undergo screening and training/orientation before starting. 

  • Access to a computer and internet is required. 

  • A minimum three-month commitment is required, with the possibility of renewal. 


Training

All volunteers must go through the onboarding process.
