Goal

Pathways to Growth is an non-profit charity organization hosted within The Learning Place as a way for adults with developmental disabilities to become more self-reliant and foster social and emotional wellbeing. It is our goal to help our students live more confidently and independently, and we want you can help us achieve that! It is our hope that our volunteers gain valuable work experience in this role, while gaining the satisfaction of helping our community.


Description

Help us teach those with developmental disabilities within our community! We are looking for dedicated and compassionate volunteers to be a teaching assistant within a structured classroom environment. This role involves assisting the lead instructor in delivering engaging lessons in areas such as life skills, literacy, recreational learning, and community-focused activities. Our volunteers play an essential role in helping us foster an inclusive, respectful, and supporting learning atmosphere for our adult learners with developmental disabilities. 

 


Benefits

We offer letters of recommendation to successful volunteers who have assisted us for at least 3 months, with a strong possibility of contract renewal based on performance. We also provide 45-60 minutes of free time between morning and afternoon for lunch and appropriate breaks. 


Qualifications

Ideal Qualities:

We hope for volunteers that are compassionate, caring, and enthusiastic, with a genuine interest in working with adults with developmental disabilities. Other qualities that will help you include: adaptability, being approachable, strong communication skills, organizational skills, and being a problem solver.

 

Education / Experience:

Previous related experience is an asset, but not required. Beneficial experience includes:

1. Working with Adults with Developmental Disabilities and Autism
2. Supporting Individuals with Autism / Dual Diagnosis / Mental health Disorders
3. Supporting Individuals with unique and challenging behaviours in an active treatment environment
4. Experience in Social Services, Education, or Caregiving

All of the above are assets but not a requirement. As for our educational requirements, we are looking for volunteers who meet at least one of the following education requirements:

1. SSW (Social Service Worker) 
2. CYW / CYC (Child and Youth Worker / Child and Youth Care)
3. Teaching
4. DSW (Developmental Service Worker)

Min Age: 18
Max Age: 70   
Police Check: Required   
Resume:Required   
Driver's Licence: Not required   
Proof of Vaccination: Not required


Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment
Shifts are available on the following days
 - Tuesday Morning, Tuesday Afternoon, Wednesday Morning, Wednesday Afternoon, Thursday Morning, Thursday Afternoon

Our schedule for this location would be Tuesdays- Thursdays from 9am - 3pm, excluding the hour lunch break. Once our volunteers are fully trained and orientated, we do not require all 3 days to be attended. We prefer the busiest two days if possible, but can be flexible around your schedule.


Training

Orientation and training will be conducted during a slower paced day, based on our scheduled busy days.
