Goal

As a Wheels of Hope Volunteer Driver, you’ll be an key part of each client’s support team, and your familiarity with CCS programs/services will also enable you to refer to them to appropriate resources that will ensure everyone has access to the supports needed. You will be part of the larger Wheels of Hope team, including over 1,600 volunteer drivers and many staff who share your desire to help as many people as possible get to their treatments and have access to vital resources


Description

As a Wheels of Hope Volunteer Driver, you'll typically:

  • Respond to requests for client rides from the Transportation Coordinator, ideally via email, and wherever possible being flexible with your schedule as busy days/times/periods change
  • Confirm travel arrangements with client(s) by phone
  • Offer minimal assistance to get clients in and out of the car (no lifting permitted)
  • Put client safety first by following safe driving procedures and keeping your licence and insurance details in good standing and updated
  • Adhere to all Canadian Cancer Society policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines including client confidentiality, role boundaries, COVID-19 safety precautions, and our 100% 'smoke free' policy

Qualifications

In taking on the role of Wheels of Hope Volunteer Driver, you understand that cancer can change everything and that CCS clients accessing critical programs and services is a top priority. Specific requirements:

  • You have a valid Class G Ontario Driver’s Licence with a maximum of 3 demerit points and an acceptable driving record (subject to verification on request)
  • You have ongoing access to, or own, a reliable, smoke-free motor vehicle that carries a minimum of $1M third party liability insurance as required in Ontario 
  • Commitment to ensure that the CCS client whom you're driving has a pleasant ride, without having to worry about transport or making an appointment on time
  • Reliable access to the Internet (email/scheduling software), necessary to communicate effectively with CCS clients and the Transportation Coordinator
  • Commitment to represent CCS positively as you interact with members of the public and are a guest in treatment facilities, such as Hospitals, Cancer Centres, and Lodges
  • Criminal backgroud check is required
  • You are at least double vaccinated for Covid19 (and can provide proof, if requested)
  • Rigorous adherence to CCS procedures, including COVID-19 safety precautions, and commitment to client confidentiality

Shifts are available on the following days
 - Monday Morning, Monday Afternoon, Tuesday Morning, Tuesday Afternoon, Wednesday Morning, Wednesday Afternoon, Thursday Morning, Thursday Afternoon, Friday Morning, Friday Afternoon

FLEXIBLE, subject to a mutually agreed WEEKLY SCHEDULE: We ask our volunteer drivers to dedicate a MINIMUM of a half-day to one day weekly, although we are able to accommodate those able to give a few days a month or during particular times of the year (ie summer months, winter months). Every effort will be given to providing you with your schedule at least 3 days ahead of time, bearing in mind client demand and other factors, including your preference/availability.


Training

ORIENTATION and TRAINING are provided, together with ongoing support from your local Transportation Coordinator, who will be providing your driving schedule and be there to help you throughout your time on the road.
