Goal

MICBA Forum Italia Community Services (Forum Italia) operates a Supportive Housing Program with the purpose of providing Attendant Services to seniors 65 and over in permanent community residential settings when their support service needs require the availability of 24-hour, on-site assistance. The role of any Supportive Housing program is to provide an alternative to Long Term Care facilities while maintaining people’s independence and integration into their communities. Ours is a multicultural initiative that has matured into an established presence, highly regarded in the community that we serve. We have always recognized the challenges that older adults (especially seniors 65+) face in terms of being isolated within their communities, and in feeling genuinely lonely. Such isolation and loneliness often lead to physical and emotional health issues that seriously compromise a senior's enjoyment of life.MICBA has re-activated its extensive recreation/leisure programs, including various indoor activities that include popular card games (Crazy Eights, Solitaire, Go Fish, Poker, plus the Italian card games Scopa, Briscola - see separate volunteering opportunity: Volunteer Opportunities - Report - Volunteer MBC) and we seek enthusiastic, friendly and engaging volunteers to facilitate these card games for our resident seniors. Our seniors traditionally have enjoyed playing these games, and in doing so, they experience vital 'socialization' and other health benefits. See DESCRIPTION and QUALIFICATIONS, below.

Description

Our Card Game Volunteers set up and facilitate our resident seniors in playing cards in our facility's dining room, including supervising 'buy in', dealing, conducting 'pay outs' on winning hands, and otherwise assisting players who need help. More specifically:

  1. Check in at the volunteering office and obtain attendance sheet
  2. Remind and recruit residents to participate (names and rooms numbers on sheet), plus invite others
  3. Set up the games/card tables, having regard to COVID-19 Safety Protocols
  4. Take attendance (when in doubt ask the residents to tell you their names)
  5. Collect money from players, if applicable
  6. Start the paricular card game that will be played, deal the cards, and make sure that participants are made fully aware of the rules
  7. Volunteer to assist residents that need help
  8. Restore the dining room after the session is concluded, observing COVID-19 Safety Protocols
  9.  Sign out on the time sheet on the volunteer board
  10.  Slide attendance sheet under the Volunteer Coordinator door
