Goal

For over 27 years, Knights Table has served the needs of people dealing with issues of poverty and homelessness in Peel region. Driven by client needs, Knights Table is supported by a staff of 10 along with over 3,200 volunteers who are committed to assisting people who come through our doors. The staff and volunteers assist the clients regardless of colour, culture, religion, economic status, gender, sexual orientation, or social condition. We are supported by various levels of government, businesses, charitable foundations, groups, churches and individuals. Their assistance makes it possible for our doors to remain open 365 days a year to serve over 79,000 meals annually. The existence and scope of our organization would not be possible without a great team of volunteers. Join us and make a direct impact within your community, helping the less fortunate, the disadvantaged, and residents in need.The position of Volunteer Cook is a VITAL ROLE that contributes so much to the delivery of QUALITY MEAL SERVICE at our Glidden Road (Brampton) location (see MAP, below).**** During COVID, we are operating with a 'take-out' only model for our clients. No dining within the facility ****


Description

As a Volunteer Cook at Knights Table, you will:

  • Provide assistance in the kitchen, creating meal plans, while adhering to Health & Safety Standards/Regulations
  • Report to the Operations Manager, with responsibility for professional preparation and serving of hot meals (breakfast/lunch/dinner), supervising those volunteers who are assisting you
  • Provide ongoing 'customer service' to clients, including addressing any food-related questions or concerns
  • Ensure food loss is kept at a minimum
  • Assist with and ensure inventory practices and portion control are adhered to
  • Ensure volunteers, equipment and kitchen facilities meet all Region of Peel Public Health regulations
  • Ensure kitchen equipment is properly cleaned, while reporting malfunctioning equipment to the Operations Manager
  • Initiate and supervise opening and closing procedures, plus maintain a safe and tidy space that ensures that equipment is set up and stored appropriately
  • Report all concerns, accidents, and incidents to Operations Manager, ready to attend operational meetings/trainings as requested
  • Perform other related tasks, if requested

Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Prior quality experience in a commercial food preparation environment and/or formal training with strong food preparation and cooking focus
  • Recognized 'food handling certification' is a definite asset
  • Passion for helping others by volunteering
  • Commitment to learn about the Knights Table
  • Ready and able to volunteer for AT LEAST 3 MONTHS, preferably longer
  • Prepared to adhere to an agreed weekly schedule (see TIME COMMITMENT, below)
  • Respect for health and safety procedures, especially food handling

SCREENING of applicants for this volunteering opportunity initially will be virtual/remote (Tel/Email/Online interviewing), with suitable candidates invited to tour the Knights Table facilities.

Time Commitment

WEEKLY (Morning & Afternoon): We ask all volunteers to commit to a weekly schedule, to be mutually arranged.
