Description

Services and Housing In the Province (SHIP) is a Provincial leader in the broader public sector that builds strategic partnerships and programs that support the fundamental rights for Housing and Health Services throughout the Peel Region, Dufferin County, and surrounding areas. Our commitment to increase quality of life through health services and housing supports that promote mental and physical health and wellness is the passion of every employee we hire.  We value compassion, hope, inclusiveness, respect, and professionalism. 

Board Members provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance on behalf of SHIP, and for its benefit and for the benefit of those in our communities whom we assist. The involvement of the Board via the appropriate sub-committees and in general meetings is both critical and expected. More particularly, Members:

  • Provide leadership by setting the values, vision, and mission of SHIP through strategic planning and development designed to meet community needs
  • Follow policies and procedures, with periodic reviews, that govern SHIP, reflect its values, and guide its decisions
  • Provide oversight to ensure sound financial and risk management (including review and approval of budgets and annual audit reports, adherence to legal and fiduciary obligations)
  • Are key representatives of SHIP to its stakeholders, sharing a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion within the Board of Directors that in turn reflects and embraces the communities that we serve

Qualifications

For this leadership volunteering opportunity, ideal candidates will:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Have both and understanding and passion about SHIP's Vision and Mission (see GOAL and BENEFITS, above)
  • Bring to the 'role' skills/experience that will add to the Board's capacities (Preference will be given to those who have experience in health care (i.e. social work, nursing, etc.)
  • Possess demonstrable leadership qualities, initiative and drive to achieve our strategic plan's goals, thereby making an impact in the communities we serve
  • Be committed to, and active in, membership on our Board for a term of 3 YEARS (see TIME COMMITMENT, below)
  • Have awareness of not-for-profit 'governance', 'risk management' and 'best practices' (prior Board experience is an asset)
  • Have high ethical standards and integrity, plus actively promote diversity, equity and inclusion in everything SHIP does
  • Be able to collaborate effectively within our team

Time Commitment
This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment starting 2024-05-13 AND ending 2027-03-31
Shifts are available on the following days
 - Tuesday Evening

MONTHLY (excluding July/August) usually on a Wednesday, with sub-committees meeting separately
Board Members should expect to volunteer from 6 to 10 hours per month


Training

New Board Members will receive onboarding and ORIENTATION about the organization, the sector we serve, and about Board Governance, current policies and procedures.
