Goal

MICBA Forum Italia Community Services (Forum Italia) operates a Supportive Housing Program with the purpose of providing Attendant Services to seniors 65 and over in permanent community residential settings when their support service needs require the availability of 24-hour, on-site assistance. The role of any Supportive Housing program is to provide an alternative to Long Term Care facilities while maintaining people’s independence and integration into their communities. Ours is a multicultural initiative that has matured into an established presence, highly regarded in the community that we serve.

We have always recognized the challenges that older adults (especially seniors 65+) face in terms of being isolated within their communities, and in feeling genuinely lonely. Such isolation and loneliness often lead to physical and emotional health issues that seriously compromise a senior's enjoyment of life.

Developed in the 19th century in mainland China, Mahjong is a tile-based game that has been compared to the card game 'Gin Rummy'. In certain circles in North America, the game has achieved tremendous popularity and our resident seniors enjoy playing it. We're looking for enthusiasts of Mahjong who will enjoy teaching, and playing Mahjong with our seniors, both novices and experienced.

Description

What our Mahjong Volunteers will be engaged in:

  1. Sign in at the volunteer office and obtain the attendance sheet
  2. Remind residents to participate (names and room numbers on sheet), plus invite others
  3. Set up the main lobby with chairs from storage in a circle with enough space for the residents to get up and move around safely
  4. Facilitate the program (Mahjong usually is played by tables of 4 players, and you will instruct, coach, and support them, depending upon their ability, knowledge, and experience)
  5. Take attendance (when in doubt, ask the residents to tell you their names)
  6. Thank the residents for participating and tell them when you will be seeing them next
  7. Place the chairs used for Mahjong back in storage, restoring the lobby
  8. Sign out at the volunteer office, leaving the session attendance sheet

For this indoor recreational activity, COVID-19 precautions/protocols are strictly adhered to, for the health & safety of all involved (see TRAINING, below)
