Goal

We are looking for energetic, compassionate, dedicated volunteers who are focused on helping us deliver our Mission, Vision and Values. At Osler, more than 1,200 volunteers help provide a welcoming, caring environment for everyone who enters our doors. We are currently seeking musician volunteers to play background music to patients and visitors, providing an area to rest and relax, in a comforting and inviting area.


Description

Piano players needed! Volunteers are needed at all three Osler hospitals: Brampton Civic Hospital, Etobicoke General Hospital and Peel Memorial Centre. Volunteers will be providing musical entertainment for visitors, patients and staff on a grand piano in the main lobby or in the Acute Care for the Elderly unit. By sharing your time, you can help patients relax, recover and restore in a comforting and enjoyable environment. If you're interested, we hope you'll consider joining us.

This is an unpaid, volunteer position.

You can request a certificate once you have completed 60 hours of service and a reference after 100 hours of service.


Qualifications

  • The minimum age to volunteer is 15 (at the time of application)
  • Fluent in English both verbal and written, additional languages may be beneficial
  • Discreet, empathetic behavior and ability to exercise diplomacy in talking to patients, patient’s family and staff
  • Must perform an audition
  • Must be dependable and committed to scheduled shifts, or provide alternative availability to substitute absences
  • A minimum time commitment of one agreed shift per week for six-eight months or 60 hours is required
  • Zero-tolerance for breach of confidentiality and/or theft
  • Must adhere to all Osler policies
  • Minimum Grade six piano level or equivalent experience
  • Must display confidence playing in public

Time Commitment
This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment
Shifts are available Anytime

There is a 60-hour minimum requirement for all volunteers (this takes about six to eight months to complete if you are volunteering once a week for two hours). A typical volunteer opportunity is based on a fixed schedule, once per week (e.g. every Tuesday 10am-12pm).

An audition process is required and conducted by an experienced Healing Music Program volunteer or a Volunteer Services staff member.
