About the Position
3406 - Youth Farm Crew

To involve youth in urban agriculture and provide leadership opportunities in the environmental field as well as peer leadership opportunities.

The Ecosource Youth Farm Crew is a group of youth (ages 15-25) in Mississauga who will support the gardening and stewardship activities at the Iceland Teaching Garden, as well as on-site environmental projects. This team will also support other volunteer programs that take place at the garden as peer leaders. Ecosource staff will support your learning to be able to work in these programs and you will have the opportunity to contribute to the vision of what Iceland can be. This program is meant to be a place where you can learn, and don’t need all of the answers to participate! We are looking to build skills in Mississauga youth for food and climate action – but all you need to participate is curiosity and willingness to learn!

Some of the skills that you’ll have the chance to practice are:

  • - Leadership skills by supporting volunteers
  • - Communication skills and working in groups
  • - Ability to take on and direct tasks
  • - Practicing initiative to see what needs to be done
  • - Low-barrier way to practice what running a community program or camp is like
  • - Optimizing food growth, learning about climate resilience
  • - Keeping records, researching and tracking for projects

Any task or session where you’d be volunteering, you will be accompanied by Ecosource staff. Staff will assist you with anything you have questions about! We’ll go over what needs to be done for the session, and how you can support.

Volunteer sessions usually run between 2-3 hours, and you would be required to arrive 15 minutes ahead of time to help set up and to debrief, and to stay 15 minutes afterwards to help tidy up.
The Spring sessions (May-June) are Tuesdays, 4pm-6:30pm, Summer sessions (July-Aug.) are Tuesdays, 8am-11am, and Fall sessions (Sept. – Oct.) are Tuesdays, 4:30pm-6:30pm. We’ll have other groups coming through in the summer that you will have the opportunities to support as well for other dates.

Some of the tasks that you’d be helping with in any given session could be:

  • Setting up tools
  • Welcoming new volunteers; give an intro to the program
  • Filling rainbarrels
  • Fielding any questions from volunteers, or directing to Ecosource staff
  • Helping to collect or put away tools
  • Weighing and packing produce
  • Looking for any other ways to help out!
