Location:
Mississauga, Virtual

Goal

Safe City Mississauga is a registered charitable organization founded in 1992 to help reduce criminal opportunity and criminal victimization in Mississauga. We provide resources, staff, professional community leadership and guidance for crime prevention programs and activities. We also encourage crime prevention education within the public, private and voluntary sectors, plus research, develop and implement new community crime prevention programs and activities.

Our Aspire Tutoring program is a no-fee, high quality online tutoring program for children in Grades 2 to 6, provided for students living in priority neighbourhoods in Mississauga who have an academic and economic need. Along with tutoring, the program offers learning journeys where students attend virtual events to connect with one another and their tutors outside of our classrooms!

The Aspire Tutoring initiative closes opportunity gaps in education by providing a foundation for success in school. By improving academic achievement and building peer relationships, Aspire helps students reach their full potential.

A key role in Aspire Tutoring is that of the Volunteer Tutor. We seek keen, committed volunteers to engage with students within Mississauga virtually/online, tutoring those children who otherwise might not have access to help with early learning.

As a Volunteer Tutor, you will meet with your tutee weekly in our virtual classrooms which feature an online whiteboard for real-time collaboration. The one-hour sessions are structured using our Ontario curriculum-based worksheets which cover key subtopics in math and language arts. Sessions are offered Mondays to Fridays, from 3 to 6pm, and on Saturdays, from 10am to 6pm.

Description

Tutoring sessions will be conducted 'virtually', over the Internet, from the Volunteer Tutor's home. You will use your own computer to access the Internet and hold live 'video' teaching sessions. In terms of PREPARATION, you will review content prior to weekly 1-hour tutoring sessions.  Associated tasks undertaken by the Volunteer Tutor include:

  • Tutor and mentor 1 student, ranging from Grades 2 to 6, in math and language arts
  • Schedule and facilitate tutoring sessions in virtual classrooms using our online platform (using Google Chrome browser and Gmail account)
  • Use our original, Ontario curriculum-based worksheets on a virtual whiteboard to simulate in-person learning through real-time collaboration
  • Ensure excellent attendance and provide the Program Coordinator & tutee with advanced notice in the event that a session will be missed
  • Attend Aspire-related events (learning journeys, community parties/events, recognition events, etc.) when available
  • Attend training sessions when required
  • Adhere to all confidentiality policies pertaining to program participants and organizational information
