Goal

Safe City Mississauga is a registered charitable organization founded in 1992 to help reduce criminal opportunity and criminal victimization in Mississauga. We provide resources, staff, professional community leadership and guidance for crime prevention programs and activities. We also encourage crime prevention education within the public, private and voluntary sectors, plus research, develop and implement new community crime prevention programs and activities.'Aspire Site Coordinators' are responsible for on-site supervision of volunteer tutors through assistance with lesson planning, curriculum development, and scheduling. Site Coordinators also provide weekly written reports to Aspire staff and may be asked to assist with special events and data collection. THIS is an excellent opportunity for those who aspire to a career in teaching.


Description

Aspire students (2nd to 6th grades) are paired with a peer tutor (high-school or college/university student) who meet once a week after school to work on an area of academic need. Only students with an identified area of academic need and/or identified geographical reference to the tutoring site are eligible. Eligibility will be part of the intake for the parents and input can come from the student's teacher, social worker, etc.[ PLEASE NOTE: The 'Aspire' program is suspended during the COVID-19 Emergency, but 'Safe City Mississauga' continues to recruit actively for volunteers to support this program. Please refer to other sections of this posting for details. ]Typical tasks undertaken by the 'Aspire Site Coordinator' include:- Open and close the Aspire tutoring facility at the outlined hours of operation while providing supervision to program participants on the scheduled day(s)- Effectively manage volunteer attendance, hours, scheduling and task performance of assigned team and report to the Youth Services Manager- Prepare work for new volunteer tutors to use with students using a systematic plan of lessons, worksheets, discussions, etc., and/or assist volunteer tutors with this task- Review volunteer tutor lesson plans to ensure alignment with the organization's requirements through doing "Check-ins' and "Check outs' in addition to ensuring Student Profile Reports are received in a timely manner as requested by the Youth Services Manager- Adhere to all confidentiality policies pertaining to program participants and organizational information- Assist tutors in preparing, assigning and correcting homework and tests where appropriate- Evaluate the progress of students and discuss results with the Youth Services Manager- Communicate with parents of the students (parent meetings) when necessary and as requested by the Youth Services Manager- Tutor students in their appropriate subjects when tutors are absent and/or as required- Execute client intake meetings and facilitate volunteer tutor orientations when required- Prepare weekly site notes and send to the Youth Services Manager at the requested intervals- Assist the Youth Services Manager in the planning and execution of special student events and learning journeys when required- Assist the Youth Services Manager with special projects, seminars, workshops, conferences, etc., if requested- Ensure the site is kept clean and organized by the end of the hours of operation- Other tasks as need to be assigned*** PLEASE NOTE: We are 'virtually screening' applicants during the COVID-19 Emergency, so do not hesitate to use the yellow box 'Apply Now!' Qualifications

● Post-secondary education/teaching student or certified teaching professional preferred● Organized, reliable, capable of leading/supervising program tutors and coordinating the 'classroom' and curricula● Engage for a minimum of 6 MONTHS, including weekly 'class' time, prep time, assessment/evaluation, and periodic meeting with 'Safe City Mississauga' staff● Must complete an application including two references (preferably not family/friend references, rather academic/professional) ● All applicants to be available for interview(s)● 'Police Vulnerable Sector Check' required

This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment
Shifts are available Anytime

WEEKLY (1 to 3 days per week): After 3 PM until approximately 6 PMPlus prep time, time for evaluation/assessment of participants, periodic meetings with 'Safe City Mississauga' staffSpecific scheduling of volunteers will be mutually arranged on an individual basis.


Training

Orientation ('virtual' during COVID-19), then ongoing TRAINING commensurate with what you're engaged to do.
