Goal

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel will be serving Syrian newcomer families and children through our Conversation Club and a Newcomer Art Program this coming school year (2019-20), and we are looking for mentors! Availability to volunteer during the school day is needed for these programs.

Description

Conversation Club will support Syrian newcomer youth (ages 11-14) at Glenhaven Senior Public School during the school day. The program focuses on English language skills development, social skills development, learning about Canada, and establishing peer connections across cultures.

Benefits

For just a few hours twice a month, you can help a child succeed! Big Brothers Big Sisters is different from other mentoring organizations in that we seek volunteers who are committed and consistent, willing to serve at least 1 year, AND, we hope, until a child graduates high school. Studies show that by doing so, our mentoring services help kids stay in school, avoid risky behaviour, and that our mentor volunteers experience first-hand the importance, and personal satisfaction and joy, of helping others in our local community, notably newcomer youth.

Qualifications

Mentors are young adults 20 to 30 years of age, who have lived in Canada for at least 5 years. Volunteers are required to provide a clean police check, and they must demonstrate a keen interest in mentoring newcomer youth.
