Goal

Active Adult Centre of Mississauga (AACM) is a welcoming place that celebrates individuality and diversity, inspiring older adults to embrace their vitality, optimize their health and well-being, and broaden their horizons. Our friendly Centre is open 7 days a week to 1400+ members who are involved in a wide variety of programs. We also are home to 7 different cultural older adult groups and clubs. The key word is 'Active'!

We see an urgent need at this time to recruit CONVERSATIONAL FRENCH INSTRUCTORS to volunteer their time at the Centre on a weekly basis, engaging our seniors who want to learn how to speak simple French in the course of healthy, enriching socialization.


Description

As a Volunteer Conversational French Instructor, you will be engaged to:

  • Lead and guide a small group of older adults (50+) in conversational French that is suitable for fun, socialization, and travel (with possibly a cultural perspective)
  • Plan a 3 MONTH informal 'lesson plan' (timetable with supporting materials, resources, handouts) See TIME COMMITMENT, below.
  • Lead 1 HOUR sessions, to be scheduled WEEKLY (exact number to be determined)
  • Engage in an ongoing evaluation of the capabilities of the group, and adjust the program accordingly
  • Employ French as an opportunity for our older adults to socialize

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in the French language, spoken and written (in addition to English)
  • Friendly, engaging, confident in being conversational with adults 50+
  • Sensitive and accommodating about seniors' special needs
  • Past experience facilitating/leading a class of a group of adults or seniors is a definite asset
  • To promote continuity in this program, the Centre prefers that volunteers commit to an overall engagement of AT LEAST 3 MONTHS (April through July, 2023)

SCREENING of suitable candidates will be by telephone/email, plus you may be interviewed at the Centre.

Time Commitment
This is a Short Term (3 months or less) commitment starting 2023-04-03 AND ending 2023-07-03
Shifts are available Anytime

WEEKLY: Sessions will each be for 1 HOUR. Program schedule will be determined when volunteers are confirmed.


Training

ORIENTATION and TRAINING in terms of session setup, resources, and teaching/learning formats will be provided.
