Goal

The 'Newcomer Youth Leadership Development Program' (NYLD) is a unique leadership-based settlement program for newcomer youth and their families with a focus on integration, settlement, skill-building, volunteerism and community involvement.NYLD seeks capable and committed volunteers to tutor students in MATH or SCIENCE, who are participating in the Program. Description

Major aspects of this role:- Provide small group and/or 1-1 math or science tutoring sessions for newcomer high school students during exam periods and on an as needs basis- Assist student in developing study skills and organizational techniques to improve their academic performance- Recognize deficiencies and improve overall performance through both general and focused tutoringPLEASE complete the YMCA Greater Toronto volunteer application form AFTER you 'click' on the yellow box 'Apply NOW!' Qualifications

● Must currently be enrolled or have completed a college or university level program in a field related to math or science● Successful applicants to this role will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening from their local police service before their first day of volunteering and every 3 years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering● Experience and sensitivity dealing with people from different cultural, racial, and/or socio-economic backgrounds.● Responsible, punctual, outgoing and friendly ● Assets for applicants: Knowledge of the Ontario High School Curriculum● Experience teaching or tutoring also an asset● Flexibility in moving between different NYLD sites

Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment starting 2018-12-04
Shifts are available on the following days
 - Thursday Afternoon, Thursday Evening, Saturday Morning, Saturday Afternoon

A minimum of one semester September to January or February to June. Minimum of 1-2 hours a week with additional hours during exams and on a needs basis. Since some NYLD programs run on weekends, some tutors will be required to volunteer on weekends. The Brampton Union St YMCA's NYLD program runs Thursdays from 4:30pm to 6:30pm, and occasionally on Saturdays.


Training

Training will be provided at the start of the volunteering engagement, and as needed during the experience.
