Goal

Start the fall of 2019 with purpose, by meaningfully improving the quality of life of an adult who has an intellectual disability.Volunteers will be matched with an adult who has an intellectual disability to pursue mutual leisure and recreational interests for a period of 12 weeks. The goal of the position is to ensure that the person's quality of life in the community is meaningfully improved.


Description

Once a week, on a mutually agreeable day (and time), volunteers will meet with a pre-assigned person to enjoy an activity that is of mutual interest to both parties for a period of 12 weeks. (Any costs associated with course fees will be covered for the volunteer). Meetings and activities are expected to last 2 hours each, and may take place on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends. Volunteers will be introduced to their respective 'matches' prior to start of the 12-week engagement. Qualifications

● You are a friendly volunteer with an interest in improving the quality of life of an individual who has an intellectual disability● Add to that, you're thoughtful, empathetic, with an ability to motivate and encourage ● You come with well-developed interpersonal and communications skills● You're prepared to adhere strictly to CLM's policies and procedures (keeping your 'match' happy, safe, and secure)● Above all, you believe in, and are committed to, the value of inclusion for all, plus you want to do something about itPlease note: Because the 'position' involves close personal interaction with a person who is 'vulnerable', a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check is required.

Time Commitment
This is a Short Term (3 months or less) commitment starting 2019-10-21 AND ending 2020-03-31

At mutually convenient times for you and the person with whom you are matched, volunteering at least 2 hours during each week of your engagement.(Accordingly, it's anticipated that the volunteer will support the 'matched adult' by meeting weekly for 12 weeks.)


Training

Attend an Orientation & Training Session, where you will be given all the information you will need to make this a successful volunteer experience.
(Training will include instruction about Community Living Mississauga's policies and procedures as prerequisite to your volunteer engagement.)
