GoalParkinson Canada is the voice of Canadians living with Parkinson's disease. Our purpose is to transform the lives of people living with Parkinson's. We do this through research leading to the end of Parkinson's, advocacy bringing the voices of Parkinson's to the forefront and support that helps people live well with Parkinson's through education and services.We are looking for a volunteer(s) to help facilitate the monthly 'Living with Parkinson's' Support Group in Brampton, Ontario. This group meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at Holland Christian Homes, located at 7900 McLaughlin Road South (corner of McLaughlin & Steeles). |

Description> The volunteer 'Facilitator' provides education and support at monthly group meetings to persons with Parkinson's, members of their families, and/or their caregivers in dealing with the challenges of living with the condition. >> In the role, the 'Facilitator' encourages group members to share experiences, ideas and feelings, address challenges, develop supportive friendships and receive current information about Parkinson's disease.>>> Administrative responsibilities include:- Plan the monthly sessions in collaboration with staff and other volunteers- Engage in set-up of the area to be used at Holland Christian Homes- Arrange/provide refreshments for the sessions- Tidy up/restore the area after the session concludes- Liaise with staff to invite guest speakers for sessions, when needed or desired |

Qualifications● To promote continuity and trust within the session participants, we ask that the volunteer 'Facilitator' commit to these sessions for a MINIMUM of 1 year● Excellent oral/written English, confident/conversational in leading discussions● Experience in facilitating or moderating support groups or meetings is an asset● Background in nursing, social work, physiotherapy, speech language pathology, and/or other medical aspects of Parkinson's disease is also an asset ('position' would be ideal for a retired professional)● Empathy, sensitivity, compassion● Committed to diversity and inclusiveness● Respect for privacy and confidentialityThe nature of this role necessitates that a satisfactory 'Police Vulnerable Sector Check' be provided by our volunteers. Time CommitmentThis is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment starting 2019-09-01 AND ending 2020-06-30
Shifts are available on the following days - Tuesday Afternoon Typically, the 4th TUESDAY of the MONTH, at 1:30 PM, for about 2 hoursOverall commitment: 2-4 hours per month, (includes the 2 hour meeting and 1 hour preparation time), for a minimum of 1 year |
