Goal

Are you caring for someone who has a chronic health condition and passionate about helping others? Are you involved in an organization that supports caregivers? Are you comfortable speaking in front of small groups and interested in helping other caregivers to build a wealth of self-care skills? If so, we have a Peer Leader Training opportunity for you! We are seeking long-term volunteers from the Central West Region (Brampton, Malton, Dufferin County, Caledon, Woodbridge, Rexdale) to become Peer Leaders through certification with the 'Powerful Tools for Caregivers' Program. Training is delivered in English, but we welcome facilitators who can deliver the workshop in English, French, Punjabi, and Hindi. Description

The 'Powerful Tools for Caregivers' (PTC) program is a highly successful evidenced-based workshop developed by Stanford University. It runs for 1.5 hours, once a week, for 6 consecutive weeks and is led by 2 Peer Leaders. In the 6 weekly classes, caregivers develop a wealth of self-care tools to: reduce personal stress; change negative self-talk; communicate their needs to family members and healthcare or service providers; communicate effectively in challenging situations; recognize the messages in their emotions and deal with difficult feelings; and make tough caregiving decisions. As a trained 'Peer Leader', you commit to deliver a minimum of one 6 week program each year for the Central West Self-Management Program to remain certified. In appreciation for your time an honorarium in the amount of $180.00 + travel is reimbursed to each Leader upon completion of a full 6 week workshop series. The 6-week 'Powerful Tools for Caregivers' Workshops are held on various days and at different times throughout the community, which provides flexibility for the 'Peer Leader' volunteers.


Training

Training, at no cost to successful applicants, is 2 days (participants must attend both days) and will be held on Wednesday, October 16th and Thursday, October 17th, 2019, at the Ajax Convention Centre (550 Beck Cres., Ajax ON). This 2-day training will qualify you to lead the 'Powerful Tools for Caregivers' Program in your organization or in the community, as you will have earned Leader Certification.
