GoalCelebrating 100 years in 2018, the CNIB Foundation is a high profile. non-profit organization driven to change what it is to be blind today. We deliver innovative programs and powerful advocacy that empower people impacted by blindness to live their dreams and tear down barriers to inclusion. Our work as a blind foundation is powered by a network of volunteers, donors and partners from coast to coast to coast. Within the local community, the 'Vision Mate' provides personal, one-on-one sighted assistance and companionship for a person who is blind or partially sighted. For energetic, dedicated volunteers, being a 'Vision Mate' is a true in-the-field, people-oriented opportunity! As long as the COVID-19 Emergency lasts, the 'role' will be largely 'VIRTUAL' (check-in principally by phone, also online), PLUS the volunteer may run essential shopping errands for the client. |

DescriptionPLEASE NOTE: During the COVID-19 Emergency, the 'role' will be almost entirely 'VIRTUAL', concentrating on weekly telephone check-ins, PLUS volunteers are invites to do essential shopping for the client, while respecting physical 'social distancing' rules.● The role involves a one-on-one approach (with training) to assist CNIB clients in their homes and in their community. Included are: - Regular visits to a client in his/her home or other suitable environment at mutually convenient times- Activities that are determined by client need and/or mutually agreed upon (approved activities are: reading, organizing, walking, assisting with errands or outings, and friendly visiting)- Outings that are on foot, by public transportation, or taxi● Restrictions. Volunteers do NOT:- cook, clean, provide personal care, do home repairs, give advice (eg. about medical conditions/treatments, health care professionals), provide counseling, or do heavy lifting- drive clients*** When a client needs more support, service, or information than a 'Vision Mate' is able or authorized to give, the volunteer refers them to staff● Volunteers are expected to keep track of, and record, their hoursPLEASE APPLY at the earliest opportunity (no later than June 30, 2020). Qualifications● In order to promote continuity, volunteers are required to COMMIT to a ENGAGEMENT of at least 6 MONTHS● Excellent English communication skills (fluency in a second language most welcome!)● Organized, reliable, able to abide by schedules and appointments● Friendly, engaging, empathetic, plus creative in terms of activities planned with CNIB client(s)● Comfortable using 'virtual' communications technology● Available for/committed to 'Orientation & Training' for the role● Committed to ahere to CNIB policies and procedures, including the 'Volunteer Code of Conduct'*** Preliminary Screening (entirely 'virtual' during COVID-19):- Long application form and interview (telephone/online - Skype, etc.)- Orientation (preliminary)- 2 character references- 'Police Vulnerable Sector Check' required Police Check: Required Resume:Not required Driver's Licence: Not required Proof of Vaccination: Not required |

Shifts are available on the following days - Monday Morning, Monday Afternoon, Monday Evening, Tuesday Morning, Tuesday Afternoon, Tuesday Evening, Wednesday Morning, Wednesday Afternoon, Wednesday Evening, Thursday Morning, Thursday Afternoon, Thursday Evening, Friday Morning, Friday Afternoon, Friday Evening, Saturday Morning, Saturday Afternoon, Saturday Evening, Sunday Morning, Sunday Afternoon, Sunday Evening WEEKDAYS & WEEKENDS (mornings/afternoons/evenings), typically 2 HOURS PER WEEK, schedules to be mutually arranged by the volunteer and CNIB client, with our assistance and supervision. |
