GoalCelebrating 100 years in 2018, the CNIB Foundation is a high profile. non-profit organization driven to change what it is to be blind today. We deliver innovative programs and powerful advocacy that empower people impacted by blindness to live their dreams and tear down barriers to inclusion. Our work as a blind foundation is powered by a network of volunteers, donors and partners from coast to coast to coast. Our 'One-to-One Partner (Tech Mate)' volunteers provide one-to-one community-based support for a person who is blind or partially sighted to increase their confidence and assist them to live the life they choose. 'Tech Mates' help unleash the power of technology to ensure people with sight loss have the skills and tools to connect with the outside world. These volunteers work with participants to nurture the necessary skills to use a range of mainstream technology, including smartphones and mobile apps. You don't need to be tech savvy to get involved! |

DescriptionIn this role, you'll:- Help people set up new devices and/or troubleshoot any tech issues by means of telephone conversations or online interaction (post COVID-19, by one-to-one meetings in our clients' homes, or by meeting at a pre-arranged location in the local community)- Teach participants how to use and navigate various mobile apps (ex: Uber, Google Maps, Facebook, Twitter)- Share tech skills by leading or supporting technology workshops in a supportive environment- Provide one-on-one support to people in your community PROVIDED THAT:- When a client needs more support, service, counseling or information than you can give, refer them to staff - If role includes outings, these are on foot, by public transportation or taxi unless otherwise authorized- You are responsible to track and report volunteer hours as directed >>> PLEASE APPLY at the earliest opportunity (before June 2, 2020). QualificationsLength of volunteering commitment - AT LEAST 6 MONTHS (see 'Time Commitment', below)● Willingness to learn and work with people with sight loss● Existing skills to meet specific task ● Trustworthy, patient, and friendly, empathetic manner● Reliable, organized and able to work with minimal supervision● Excellent communication skills, including active listening● Strong English skills or willingness to be matched with a client who speaks volunteer’s language other than English● Agreement to abide by CNIB's Volunteer Code of Conduct, including policies and procedures concerning confidentiality, conflict of interest, and the prevention of workplace harassment and violence.● Preliminary Screening (entirely 'VIRTUAL' during COVID-19):1.
