GoalAmnesty Mississauga (Group 177) is a newly established group for human rights defenders in Mississauga and Brampton. It is a branch of Amnesty Canada and its objective is to engage volunteers who are passionate about human rights. Our members principally are high school and university students in addition to young professionals. Amnesty provide training and support to new volunteers to help them engage in their community. Our 'Human Rights Defenders' as volunteers engage in various activities designed to raise public awareness about human rights and the need to encourage society to uphold and enforce such fundamental rights. See 'Position Description', above, for details about anticipated activities that volunteers will be involved with. |

DescriptionThe 'role' includes the following:- Attend a mandatory monthly meeting- Participate in letter writing and urgent action network when a prisoner of conscience is subjected to severe human rights violation- Participate in Amnesty's campaigns such as 'Write For Rights'- When opportunities are provided, raise awareness about human rightsTO APPLY TO BE A 'HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER', Volunteer MBC clients can click the yellow box 'Apply Now!' Qualifications● Desire to understand the vision and mission of Amnesty Canada (you're passionate about human rights)● You're active in 'social media' and can navigate its most commonly used platforms● You have excellent oral and written English communications skills (fluency in additional languages is welcome)● To promote continuity in our engagement in the local community, we request an overall time commitment of 1 year● Capacity to adhere to meeting schedules, campaign/project deadlines Police Check: Not required Resume:Not required Driver's Licence: Not required Proof of Vaccination: Not required |

Time CommitmentThis is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment
Shifts are available Anytime Mandatory monthly meeting every third Wednesday night, in addition to participating in human rights campaigns |

TrainingAmnesty Canada provides an orientation session for new volunteers and continuous training and support. |
