Goal

Celebrating 100 years in 2018, the CNIB Foundation is a high profile. non-profit organization driven to change what it is to be blind today. We deliver innovative programs and powerful advocacy that empower people impacted by blindness to live their dreams and tear down barriers to inclusion. Our work as a blind foundation is powered by a network of volunteers, donors and partners from coast to coast to coast. Our 'One-to-One (Leisure Mate)' volunteers provide one-to-one community-based support for a person who is blind or partially sighted to increase their confidence and assist them to live the life they choose. Activities are based on your skill set. For example, fitness activities might include running, cycling, or gym-based support. Leisure activities could be museum outings, theatre adventures, social activities, crafting projects, or an activity of your choosing.


Description

In this role, you'll:- Assist with fitness and/or leisure activities in the CNIB client's home or by meeting at a pre-arranged location in the local community- Initially ask what activities the CNIB client wishes to engage in, plus make suggestions (use your creativity, imagination, knowledge, and skills)- Teach an activity that is new to the CNIB client (if applicable)- If desired, arrange a visit to a public attraction/event (using public transit or taxi, or walking, only)- By engaging in this role, generally provide one-on-one support to people in your communityPROVIDED THAT:- When a client needs more support, service, counseling or information than you can give, refer them to staff - If role includes outings, these are on foot, by public transportation or taxi unless otherwise authorized- You are responsible to track and report volunteer hours as directedPLEASE APPLY at the earliest opportunity (and by no later than March 19, 2020). Qualifications

● Length of volunteering commitment - AT LEAST 6 MONTHS (see 'Time Detail', below)● Willingness to learn and work with people with sight loss● Experience with leisure activities that a CNIB client can engage in is an asset● Knowledge of local public attractions is helpful● Trustworthy, patient, and friendly, empathetic manner● Reliable, organized and able to work with minimal supervision● Excellent communication skills, including active listening● Strong English skills or willingness to be matched with a client who speaks volunteer's language other than English● Agreement to abide by CNIB's Volunteer Code of Conduct, including policies and procedures concerning confidentiality, conflict of interest, and the prevention of workplace harassment and violence.Preliminary Screening:> Long Application Form (2 character references)> 'Police Vulnerable Sector Check'> Interview> Orientation> Declaration Form: Volunteer Code of Conduct

FLEXIBLE (mostly during the day), to be mutually arranged as between the volunteer and 'matched' CNIB client, although volunteers in this role usually MEET WEEKLY for AT LEAST 2 HOURS and/or attend particular events/attractions.


Training

Orientation, including: About CNIB, About the people we help, About sight loss, and About volunteering at CNIB Training specific to the position will be provided. Supervision and Ongoing Screening:
One-month probation period. Supervisor is available for ongoing training and support. Random and scheduled spot checks will be conducted to ensure quality service delivery.
