Goal

Indus Community Services (Indus) was founded in 1985 by concerned members of the Indo-Canadian community to meet the settlement and social service needs of newcomers from the Indian sub-continent. With our increasingly expanded mission, we provide educational, social, settlement, health and employment related services to help all new immigrants in Peel region. Indus wishes to enable newcomer families or individuals to accomplish a successful transition into their new community.The role of Community Connections Volunteer is ideal for someone with a sound knowledge of newcomer settlement services within our local community (ie. Mississauga, Brampton, and/or Caledon).


Description

As a Community Connections Volunteer, you will provide a newcomer with:

  • An introduction to the newcomer's adopted community and guidance about how to become familiar with it in a variety of ways
  • Ongoing support to help the newcomer (and family) get started in Canada
  • Gaining an understanding of Canadian cultural norms, social etiquette, and more
  • Providing opportunities for English language practice and learning (and access to ESL programs, if needed)
  • Skill-building and learning
  • Building a social network
  • Learning about community resources (public and private) and their effective use

PLEASE NOTE: In addition to the general volunteer role in respect of Community Connections, we have specific volunteer roles you may take on based on your skill set which can include: Technology/Computer Literacy Mentor; Career Mentor; Language Mentor (Please email Indus if you are interested in one of these more 'specific' roles.)

Qualifications

  • You have been in Canada for more than 2 years 
  • Fluency in Somali and English (volunteers may be 'matched' to a client who speaks the volunteer's native language)
  • Local knowledge of your community is a definite asset (eg. newcomer assistance services, government, community service organizations, transit, financial institutions, etc.)
  • Commitment to 'diversity, equity and inclusiveness'
  • You are able and ready to connect with your match virtually (ie. telephone/email/online, eg. Zoom, etc.) or in-person
  • Able to accommodate a schedule that will have you connecting with your client 1-2 times per week for a minimum of 3-6 months (MONTHLY time commitment is a minimum of 6 to 8 hours)
  • Ready to complete ORIENTATION and TRAINING suitable for the 'role'
  • Multilingual skills will be a definite asset
  • Vulnerable Sector Police Check required

Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment starting 2023-01-03
Shifts are available Anytime

FLEXIBLE: MONTHLY time commitment is a minimum of 6-8 hours, scheduling of meetings to be arranged. Until satisfactory resolution of COVID-19, interactions will respect physical social distancing and be virtual.


Training

MANDATORY to complete all required volunteer ORIENTATION and TRAINING sessions, all of which will be virtual (ie. telephone/email/online, eg. Zoom, etc.)
