Goal

Bereaved Families of Ontario, Halton-Peel is a non-profit, charitable organization offering compassion and care for individuals coping with the death of a loved one. We provide mutual support programs and services for families and individuals experiencing grief. Our goal is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where participants leave feeling heard, validated and are equipped with sufficient coping strategies. We are currently recruiting Overdose Loss Grief Support Group Facilitators for our Overdose Loss Support Group. This Support Group will be conducted virtually, and the group will start on Monday, January 3rd. More information can be found below.


Description

Our 8-Week, Closed Support Group will run on a weekly basis in the evenings with 1-2 Facilitators leading each group. This group will run every Monday from 6:30pm-8:00pm via Zoom for 8 weeks. 

VOLUNTEER GROUP FACILITATOR SUMMARY

Our Group Facilitators lead support groups for individuals who have experienced a loss through the death of a loved one; leading peer-to-peer support delivery with compassion and understanding in a non-judgmental environment.

SPECIFICS:

  • Establish and maintain physical and emotional and social/cultural safety
  • Provide socio-emotional support and connect group members with additional resources
  • Promote, initiate and guide interactions that are characterized by equality and non-judgment
  • Role model in the expression of authentic emotion and respectful, empathetic interactions
  • Listen empathetically by giving your full attention to the speaker
  • Journey alongside members as they navigate their grief and mourn the loss of their loved one
  • Reassure group members of the individual nature of grief
  • Observe group members’ expressions and reactions
  • Identify, intervene and help to resolve conflict
  • Explore opportunities for growth and change

Qualifications

  • You MUST have experienced a loss of someone close to you as the result of an overdose to be considered. Please note this in your application. 
  • Facilitators must be 19 years of age or older
  • Facilitators must commit to an engagement of EIGHT (8) WEEKS, in order to provide group members with consistency and continuity
  • The ideal Facilitator will have experienced an overdose loss and will be able to share that lived experience in a positive manner with group members
  • You're able to demonstrate the following traits: compassion, social inclusion, integrity, non-judgment, adaptability, self-disclosure, resiliency, and self-management
  • A 'Police Vulnerable Sector Check' will be required prior to facilitating your first Group
  • Applicants must be able to commit to an online and in-class/virtual volunteer Facilitator training if approved for the Program
  • Facilitators must have reliable access to the Internet via suitable devices (PC, laptop, etc.) and software (eg. Zoom, etc.)
  • Absolute respect for privacy/confidentiality

Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment starting 2022-01-03 AND ending 2022-02-28
Shifts are available on the following days
 - Monday Evening

This group will run every Monday from 6:30pm-8:00pm via Zoom for 8 weeks. Facilitators meet 15 minutes prior to group's start time and 15 minutes after group's end time (6:15pm-8:15pm).


Training

QUARTERLY. INTRODUCTORY TRAINING is MANDATORY for all volunteer Facilitators to complete:

> 7.5 hours of online, independent learning specific to the Centre for Grief & Healing

> 7.5 hours of in-class or 'virtual' learning (THIS INCLUDES a review of organizational policies & procedures specific to the Centre for Grief & Healing)

> 1-2 peer support group shadow sessions

> 1 co-lead of a peer support group session

ONGOING TRAINING: Existing volunteers will be offered ongoing training opportunities annually

QUARTERLY: Volunteers must attend AT LEAST ONE (1) 'volunteer engagement night' per year - The 'Topic of the Night' for the volunteer engagement nights are derived from initial training components, as these discussions will serve as 'refresher' training for all our volunteers

*** Our 'Centre for Grief and Healing Team' is committed to support our 'Facilitators' in their vital volunteer leadership 'roles'!
