Goal

Hospice volunteers are highly respected and valued members of the Bethell Hospice trans-disciplinary team who generously give of themselves and their time. They each bring unique gifts to those they serve. Kitchen Volunteers prepare the daily foods provided to residents, maintain sanitary practices for cleanliness, and ensure that safe food preparation standards are met. Kitchen Volunteers also maintain the coffee station and assist caregivers/visitors in navigating kitchen boundaries.


Description

  • Volunteers in the kitchen are interested in food preparation, re-stocking and maintenance of sanitary practices for cleanliness, ensuring that food preparation standards are met.
  • Prepare and store food according to Food Safety Standards
  • Offer resident food choices following Bethell Hospice philosophy regarding client-centered care
  • Prepare meal trays ensuring presentation of food is attractive
  • Report meals residents have eaten
  • Prepare snacks, tea and coffee as required
  • Communicate regarding needed food and other supplies
  • Clean equipment, tools, work areas and kitchen per health, safety and sanitation regulations
  • Wash dishes and run sanitizer as required
  • Follow kitchen guidelines as set by the Ministry of Health
  • Check and maintain adequate levels of supplies
  • Perform temperature audits to ensure refrigerator and freezer are at correct temperatures

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Proficiency in both oral and written English, knowing a second language is an assett 
  • Sensitive, compassionate, flexible and conscientious

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times

  • Meet physical requirements of the position; able to work on your feet for longer periods of time. Each shift is 4 hours, there are times to sit.
  • Review of kitchen routine guidelines, completion of food handling training 
  • Sucessful completion of the screening requirements and Bethell New Volunteer Onboard Training

Time Commitment
This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment
Shifts are available on the following days
 - Monday Evening, Tuesday Evening, Wednesday Evening, Thursday Evening, Friday Evening, Saturday Morning, Saturday Afternoon, Saturday Evening, Sunday Morning, Sunday Afternoon, Sunday Evening

The reception position has 4 different shifts 7 days a week.  We have a greater need of volunteers for the weekend and evening shifts though recruit for other shifts as well.

Mornings - 8am to 12pm

Midday - 10am to 2pm

Afternoons - 12pm to 4pm

Evenings - 4pm to 8pm


Training

The training process for new front-line volunteers is made up of both virtual online learning and in person training sessions made up of Hospice Palliative Care Ontario training's along with Bethell Hospice specific trainings. New Volunteer On-board Trainings take place 2 to 3 times a year, usually in the spring (April) and the fall (October/November).
