Position Description: ● Provide immediate confidential crisis, suicide, and mental health support on Spectra's 24/7/365 lines in a fast-paced and supported environment
● Utilize solution-focused, helping conversations with callers/clients
● Support, manage crisis situations over the phone, and provide (when appropriate) information and referrals to callers/clients
● Assess risks with callers by exploring concerns, ask clarifying questions, and discussion of options to provide appropriate emotional support
● Document and summarize calls as needed
● Receive regular and ongoing feedback for improvement in service and personal development

Goal of Position: Spectra Community Support Services is a non-profit organization that provides free, confidential, and multilingual support to people in crisis, people with mental health issues, for those individuals who are socially or psychologically isolated, and to the marginalized.

We are seeking volunteers for our Helpline who are passionate about helping others, enjoy speaking on the phone with people from all walks of life, and have an openness and willingness to help those in times of crisis/isolation and to be an supportive and listening ear to Helpline callers.

Volunteers will enjoy a challenging and essential, vital role within our community service organization, assisting those who really need a kind word, and often so much more.

Training Details: Training is required. Spectra Community Support Services provides an intensive training program. Training includes but is not limited to the following topics:

- Solution Focused Model
- Mental Health
- Crisis and Suicide Intervention/Support
- Values
- Aging
- Postpartum
- Sexuality
- Abuse
- Diversity
Position Qualifications: ● Minimum 18 years of age
● 2 professional/volunteer references
● Volunteering commitment: 100 hours of volunteer service within 6 months (approx. 16 hours per month)
● Warm, friendly disposition
● Non-judgmental, committed to diversity and inclusiveness in our community and an openness to speaking with people from all walks of life
● Good listening and conversational skills and a willingness to learn
● Ability to be level-headed with someone who is in stressful situations
● Accepting of callers/clients with a variety of concerns and callers/clients with varying backgrounds/cultures/values/etc.
● Able to learn and follow policies and procedures (incl. strict confidentiality)
● Working knowledge of computer applications and/or a willingness to learn
● Good command of the English language (spoken and written)
● Interest in learning and applying helpline responder skills and a willingness to grow in your role and be open to ongoing constructive feedback
● Proficiency with: Punjabi, Hindi or Urdu, Cantonese or Mandarin, Portuguese, or Spanish an asset

*** Able to commit to approximately 40 hours of training (e.g. 21 hours of in-class training; 6-8 hours supplementary reading; approx. 8 hours of on-the-phones training/coaching)
Time Commitment: Anytime
Duration: Long Term (More than 6 months)
Time Detail: This is a Long Term Commitment: 100 hours of volunteer service within 6 months (approx. 16 hours per month).

Upon successful screening/training, volunteers will mutually arrange a schedule with Spectra.
