This fully-immersive 6 month volunteer program brings together 11 young adults to travel to new regions of Canada, learn through volunteer service and group living, make lifelong friendships and discover themselves. Volunteers will spend 3 months in an English-speaking community and 3 months in a French-speaking community, sharing and managing a Katimavik house within each community. The group will be accompanied by a Project Leader, who resides in the house to mentor and facilitate the life-changing experience.

Katimavik Volunteers will be in the following 6 communities across Canada:
Nanaimo, BC
Calgary, AB
Saint Boniface, MB
Sudbury, ON
Quebec City, QC
Moncton, NB

With 11 youth in each Katimavik house, there will be a total of 66 Katimavik volunteers across Canada, all working to make a difference in the communities they are visiting.
Katimavik Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about many topics and to gain various new skills. This is done through experiential learning, group discussions, fun activities, workshops, and more. The program's educational aspect is fundamental and all Volunteers are expected to play an active role in the learning process.

Some of the topics and skills that you will learn about include:

> The history of Indigenous peoples in Canada and the importance of Truth and Reconciliation
> The benefits and impact of civic engagement
> Professional work skills in a variety of sectors, depending on volunteer placements
> Cooking skills, house maintenance, and practical life skills
> Conflict resolution, communication, and how to thrive within a team environment
> Environmental protection and sustainable development
> English or French as an additional language and the ability to communicate in an Indigenous language
> Leadership, advocacy, and project management skills
> Canada's cultural, geographic, and linguistic diversity
The National Experience is open to all young Canadians, aged 17-25 years old. Participants must be a Canadian citizen or be able to demonstrate that they are legally residing in Canada.

Katimavik is committed to providing an inclusive, diverse, respectful environment and encourages applications from young adults of all backgrounds, genders, religions, and cultures.

The National Experience aims to prepare youth for future employment opportunities and/or post-secondary learning. Previous work experience or studies is not required.
Before the project begins, selected applicants will receive a Volunteer Guide to help answer any question, as well as outline in more detail what life is like in Katimavik, what to pack, and important dates and deadlines.

Orientation week begins January 9, 2019, when Volunteers arrive in their new host communities. Volunteers will meet their Project Leader and the other 10 participants in their group, participate in introductory workshops and activities, and tour the workplace community partners where they will be matched for their volunteer placement.
