Position Title: Volunteer Seniors - Grandpals Project

Position Description: The 'Grandpals Project' needs seniors to volunteer in the following ways:

I. Story Circles (Tuesday (weekly) from 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm)
- Seniors will share stories/experiences with children based on a theme (or object) suggested by the session facilitator
- Seniors also will have the opportunity to lead 'story circle' sessions
II. Story Keepers (Wednesday (weekly) from 1 - 4 pm)
- Seniors will document/share their stories/experiences through scrapbooking
III. 'Bridging the Gap' (Tuesday (weekly) from 3 - 5 pm)
- Seniors will reciprocate with teens (who will acquaint seniors with 'social media') by sharing 'pre-technology' games/crafts that remembers the 'old ways' and shows that they're still fun!

The Project seeks seniors to volunteer in a variety of roles. For example:
> 'Recruiters' (who will reach into the seniors' communities (associations, residences, etc.) to inform, invite, and secure participation by seniors)
> 'Activity Coordinators' (who will organize seniors and their transport to/from their residences)
> Seniors to help with language interpretation, if needed (in keeping with 'diversity and inclusiveness')
> Seniors to help market the weekly sessions ('get the word out')
> Seniors to monitor/assist in delivery of the weekly sessions

Goal of Position: The Story Garden is a space dedicated to promoting reading and inclusiveness, regardless of age, race, religion, language or culture, with programs aimed at fighting illiteracy within the communities we serve. Our Mission: Growing vibrant communities through the transforming power of literacy ... one child, one family, one neighbourhood at a time.

Our 'Grandpals Project', about to launch (lasting 52 weeks), includes 3 weekly programs and 5 (event) 'tea parties', all of which need seniors to volunteer towards their success. The Project foremost is for the engagement of older adults, and there are few better ways to engage with your community than being a volunteer!

Training Details: 'Grandpals Project' orientation/training will be arranged, having regard to your specific role.
Position Qualifications: ● Minimum age - 55
● Solid oral/written English communication skills
● Prior programming/event experience welcome
● Friendly, engaging, confident in interaction with children (and teen youth)
● Fluency in another language welcome
● Organized, committed to abide by Project schedule(s)
● Willingness to volunteer as part of a team, and independently
Time Commitment: Tuesday Afternoon, Wednesday Afternoon
Duration: Long Term (More than 6 months)
Time Detail: 'Bridging the Gap': Tuesday's from 3 to 5 pm
'Story Circles': Tuesday's from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm
'Story Keepers': Wednesday's from 1 to 4 pm
