About the Position

North Peel & Dufferin Community Legal Services is looking for someone passionate about social justice to join our volunteer Board of Directors! We are a community legal clinic serving residents of Brampton, Caledon, and Dufferin County. We provide free legal services to low income people, including help with tenancies, disability benefits, social assistance, immigration and employment law. See details in 'Social Media' (below). Community legal clinics are funded by Legal Aid Ontario, but each one is an independent not-for-profit corporation with a community based board of directors.

We are looking for a board member with financial expertise to fill the role of Treasurer. It is a requirement that board members live or work in the area that we serve (Brampton, Caledon and Dufferin County). Previous board experience is not required. Our board of directors is a policy board, with operational matters left to the Executive Director. The board meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m., usually for about 1 1/2 hours.

● Must be resident or work in Brampton, Caledon, or Dufferin County
● Overall length of volunteer engagement is for a 3-year term, as prescribed by our corporate by-laws
● You have professional financial training and experience that involves typical financial management of a business and/or corporate organization (including preparation and analysis of financial statements and reports)
● Organized, committed to attend meetings and fulfill other obligations, with appropriate application, attention to detail, and accountability
● You are sufficiently confident and conversant so as to be able to explain and guide the Board in working/managing the financial affairs/reporting/accountability of the organization
● Prepared to learn, understand and be passionate, about the organization's vision, mandate, and mission, and capable of embracing and promoting it
● Capable of adherence to our policies and procedures, plus observe requisite confidentiality
Orientation would be provided by the board Executive and the organization's Executive Director.
