Shelter Movers Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon



Position Summary



Movers and Drivers are the “boots on the ground” and are essential to our organization’s mission. In a group of 2 - 6 movers and drivers, volunteers pack and load a client’s belongings into vehicles and transport the client to predetermined locations. Vehicles are provided for moves, and movers who have a valid driver’s license are welcome to register as drivers. 



This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way. Moves usually vary from 4 - 6 hours, depending on the circumstances. Our volunteering model is flexible and does not require a set time commitment. Volunteers sign up for moves as per their availability.



Responsibilities:




  • Meet with team members at an arranged time and place

  • Work under the direction of the Lead Mover and Move Coordinator

  • Maintain communication with the Lead Mover and team members during the move

  • Move client’s belongings into vehicles and transport the client and belongings

  • Liaise with teammates, security and/or law enforcement

  • Conduct risk assessments throughout a move

  • Maintain client confidentiality and provide trauma-informed care

  • Uphold Shelter Movers’ protocols and procedures



Time Commitment




  • Scheduling is flexible; time commitment varies depending on the move. Each move takes approximately 4 - 6 hours. Volunteers can sign up for moves according to their schedule and availability. 

  • A minimum of 2 moves per month (8 - 12 hours/month) is encouraged. This is an unpaid volunteer position.



Movers are not required to have a driver’s license. Movers who have a valid G2 or G license are welcome to register as drivers. Vehicles and transportation are provided through carshares and rental vehicles.  



Additional Requirements:



Shelter Movers volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, complete an interview process, sign a confidentiality agreement, obtain a police reference check, and attend a Trauma-Informed Care Orientation session.

  • You will have the opportunity to make a positive impact on helping families transition away from violence and abuse.

  • You will gain experience in the operations of a social service agency, including service coordination and direct client interaction.

  • You will receive training in preparation for your role, and have access to ongoing training opportunities.

  • After 3 months of satisfactory service, we can provide confirmation of volunteer service. After 6 months, we can provide a personalized reference letter.



 

 Essential Skills and Knowledge




  • Passion for Shelter Movers’ mission of supporting individuals and families fleeing violence and abuse.

  • Tact, discretion, high maturity level and good judgment.

  • Demonstrate ability to maintain confidentiality, provide trauma-informed care to clients, and remain calm during potentially stressful situations.

  • Awareness of appropriate boundaries, compassion fatigue, and self-care.

  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Able to lift moderately heavy boxes/furniture, min. 20lbs.

  • Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and hold a valid G2 or G license

  • A long-term interest in the Violence Against Women (VAW) sector is an asset

  • Ability to speak additional languages an asset

All volunteers will attend a Trauma-Informed Care orientation session. Additional training opportunities are provided after onboarding.
