A brief summary of these popular Italian card games:



Briscola: Every player is dealt eight cards, so that no cards remain undealt. Then the bidding phase begins, the purpose of which is to decide the trump suit (Briscola) and to form 2 uneven groups that will play against each other. Cards: 40 cards  Players: 2-8  Deck: Italian     Card rank (highest first): A 3 R C F 7 6 5 4 2



Scopa: Played with a standard Italian 40-card deck, mostly between 2 players or 4 in 2 partnerships, but it can also be played by 3, 5, or 6 players. The name Scopa is an Italian noun meaning "broom", since taking a 'scopa' means "to sweep" all the cards from the table. Cards: 40-card Players: 2, 3, 4, or 6 Card rank (highest first): R C F 7 6 5 4 3 2 1



Our Italian Card Game Volunteers fill a key 'role' in making these card games an extremely beneficial 'recreational experience' for our residents. What you'll be doing:




  • Welcoming our residents come to the rotary room where the games will be played (taking attendance, too)

  • Drawing to form partners/teams

  • Dealing cards

  • Assisting those residents who need a little help playing

  • Keeping score of the games



Typical tasks/responsibilities:




  1. Sign in in volunteer office

  2. Remind and recruit residents to participate (names and rooms numbers on sheet)

  3. Introduce yourself

  4. Set up table(s) and cards

  5. Draw for the partners/teams

  6. Start the game, deal the cards, and make sure to carefully explain playing procedures, while satisfying yourself that each player understands

  7. Volunteer to assist residents that need help, plus monitoring the players to ensure both participation and a positive 'recreational experience' 

  8. Take attendance (when in doubt ask the residents to tell you their apartment numbers)

  9. Clean up when the game is finished (incl. tables and chairs)

  10. Use 'Virox' antibacterial wipes (stored under the kitchen sink) to wipe down all counters and table tops

  11. Sign out in the volunteer office 

  12. Slide attendance sheet under the Volunteer Coordinator door

SCREENING of applicants will initially be remote/virtual (telephone/email/online interviewing), unless otherwise advised

An onsite ORIENTATION  will be required (approximatly 1.5 hours) This willl include: Forum Italia policies review, documentation to be signed, facility tour, and take home volunteer handbook and information.

TRAINING (over 2 sessions) will be provided by an experienced Italian Card Program volunteer
