Goal

Services and Housing in the Province (SHIP) operates 'Peace Ranch', a community mental health agency/residence offering supportive housing and social recreational rehabilitation programs to individuals with serious mental illness, as well as those who are dealing with coincidental addiction challenges. Located on a beautiful 25 acre (10 hectare) farm in Caledon, Peace Ranch provides a unique rural setting for whole health and healing. Our residence offers full time supportive housing for up to 10 individuals.Horticulture Assistant volunteers assist with the maintenance of plants in the solariums during the winter months and operation of the glass (30 x 60) greenhouse in the spring/summer/autumn. There is also outside garden work. The greenhouse and horticultural activities are part of our wellness program, and the food we grow goes back to our food security programs and regular meals at Peace Ranch.


Description

SHIP, as operator of 'Peace Ranch', stands to benefit from the assistance of a small team of dedicated volunteers (at least 4) who have knowledge in greenhouse operation and plant care. Volunteers would need to have previous experience working at a garden centre or greenhouse operation. Students 17+ are welcome (see BENEFITS, below)! You may also have opportunities to work with our residents.

Qualifications

Our Greenhouse Horticultural Assistants should have:

  • Prior knowledge or experience in greenhouse operation, horticulture techniques, horticulture therapy, and/or farming practices
  • Reliable, regular transportation to/from 'Peace Ranch' (see MAP, below)
  • An easy going attitude that will facilitate interaction with both SHIP staff and 'Peace Ranch' residents
  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, mental health recovery
  • Self-motivation, with the ability to volunteer with minimal supervision
  • Ability to take direction and follow through on tasks/projects/regularly scheduled gardening mainteance
  • SHIP requests a MINIMUM 4 to 6 MONTHS VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT (Shorter duration will be accepted, but ideally we prefer volunteer gardeners who will engage for the season, hopefully more.)
  • Given the vulnerability of 'Peace Ranch' residents and program attendees, a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check is required

Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment starting 2024-07-05 AND ending 2025-10-10
Shifts are available Anytime

FLEXIBLE, subject to regularly scheduled maintenance: A weekend person would be responsible for coming in for a hour or two, mainly watering plants. No staff direction. During the week, there will be staff to direct volunteers on tasks for the day. Once you are trained and comfortable with what's expected and required, we are flexible about your schedule.


Training

SHIP's Wellness Coordinator will conduct intake interviews, orientation, TRAINING and ongoing supervision. Experienced volunteers will guide newer volunteers when the Wellness Coordinator is not available.
