Goal

The Salvation Army Family Life Resource Centre (FLRC) is an emergency shelter in the Brampton area for women and their children escaping domestic violence. The FLRC offers moms and their children support with all the concerns they bring with them into our Centre, with the promise of strict confidentiality. Have fun co-facilitating various activities for children residing at the FLRC. The main goal here is to help these children to feel safe at play and to help them to trust that there are kind trusted adults. Child Minding Volunteers are responsible for maintaining a safe, fun environment for children to play in and develop social skills. 


Description

As a Child Minding Volunteer:

  • You will be volunteering under the supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator and the Childminding Worker.  
  • Successful candidates will be responsible for the temporary care of children ages 4 years and under, and responsible for the care, safety, and well-being of the children.
  • The Child Care room is open between the hours of  9:00am - 3:00pm, but the shifts will only be for 2-3hours in the morning or afternoon on weekdays. There are also some 2 hour evening times around 5:00pm-7:00pm.
  • In this role, you will display an understanding of the healthy development of children in this age group and to clearly communicate with children and their parents in a positive, caring and respectful manner.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age - 16
  • Overall time commitment - 3 months, preferably more to encourage continuity
  • Proficient in English communication (fluency in a second language welcome)
  • Experience taking care of children ages 0-4 years (incl. generally looking after them, feeding, activities to stimulate learning, recreation, and fun - education in 'early childhood education' is an asset)
  • Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check required if you are 18 years old or more.
  • Ensuring children's safety (incl. use of First Aid (esp. Child Care Emergency and CPR certification), if necessary)

SHIFT SCHEDULING: Volunteers are usually needed for up to two hour periods, unless on occasion there is something special going on.  You give us your availability and we will work with you!
