Goal

Volunteer Music Director

Partners Community Health (PCH) is a not-for-profit, charitable organization focused on bringing healthcare services together around the needs of people living in Mississauga and West Toronto. PCH manages Wellbrook Place, two state-of-the-art Long Term Care homes (Wellbrook Place East and Wellbrook Place West) and Seniors’ Hub at 2180 Speakman Drive in Mississauga. The homes have a combined 632 beds and are a part of PCH’s larger strategy that introduces innovative and inclusive programs and services and new models of care delivery.

Purpose:

Participating in creative expression through music in an inclusive setting promotes social, mental and emotional wellbeing. Some positive outcomes our residents will have from participating include lowered blood pressure through a decrease in stress, learning new ways to express thoughts and feelings and an improved self-image. Share your love of music at Wellbrook Place.

Volunteer Music Directors plan, organize and facilitate music classes and/or workshops for Wellbrook Place residents.


Description

  • Plan and organize a weekly music classes/workshops or organize and lead a resident choir or band;
  • Teach simple, failure-free musical techniques in a non-threatening environment;
  • Encourage residents to participate at their highest level of independence by using adapted equipment and techniques whenever possible;
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies; Ensure equipment/supplies are sanitized before and after session;
  • Arrange for guest speakers, contests, outings to encourage residents’ interest;
  • Organize rehearsals and performances for families and fellow residents;
  • Assist and encourage resident participation;
  • Document attendance and participation of each resident;
  • Notify supervisor of any needed items, concerns with attendees, or progress you noted following each session.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older;
  • Must have knowledge/experience of music;
  • Have a motivating and encouraging demeanor;
  • Have patience, a positive attitude and enjoy spending time with older people;
  • Previous experience in a palliative, long term care or community care setting, or a recreational setting, an asset;
  • Have strong active listening skills;
  • An ability to stay calm and seek assistance, if needed;
  • Written/verbal fluency in verbal English (additional languages may be beneficial).

Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment starting 2024-07-10
Shifts are available Anytime

Shifts will be 1.5 hours in length and will be scheduled in agreement with the Assistant Director of Programs. Please speak to the Volunteer Coordinator regarding your weekly availability.
