To create a friendly, social, and engaging community hub within Nance Horwood Place by assisting in supporting the operation of the Community Kiosk - an on-site food security support for older adults.


Description

Services and Housing In the Province (SHIP) has championed the fundamental right of housing in Ontario for nearly 30 years. As a respected health service and housing support provider, we advocate for Healthy Housing by forming lasting relationships with landlords and developers. We advocate for mental and physical health services through in-house service teams and partnerships with community-based agencies. SHIP is known for our record of identifying gaps in available service provision and directly addressing those needs. 

Located in Brampton – Nance Horwood Place is a unique independent housing facility dedicated to supporting older adult individuals who have lived experience with mental health along with physical health related concerns. Individuals are encouraged to engage in various social/recreational programming opportunities to ensure a holistic approach to their well-being and recovery.

The Community Kiosk offers ​​ a variety of much-needed, every-day items for sale at subsidized or no cost, along with access to healthier food options.

With the launch of the Community Kiosk, Nance Horwood Place has experienced a significant increase in social engagement among residents and visitors as the Kiosk is located by the main entrance where many clients and visitors meet. The Community Kiosk goal has always been to increase overall client engagement, build community, support convenience for both clients and surrounding community guests and provide a level of food security without leaving home.Volunteer tasks will include:

  • Opening Routine
  • Review inventory and count new arrivals
  • Greet and engage with all visitors and customers
  • Space organization
  • Sell products
  • Record sales
  • Closing Routine

Qualifications

  • Ability to engage in meaningful conversations with older adult demographic
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to volunteer as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to track monetary transactions using a laptop and spreadsheets, i.e. Microsoft Excel
  • Personal transportation to location is required.

Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment starting 2024-09-23 AND ending 2025-08-01
Shifts are available on the following days
 - Monday Morning, Tuesday Morning, Wednesday Morning

Training

Training will be provided prior to starting the role.
