Goal

The Neighbourhood Watch Team Lead is an essential role on the Safe City Mississauga crew and crucial to keeping Mississauga one of the safest large cities in Canada. As a Neighbourhood Watch Team Lead you’ll have the exciting opportunity to lead crime prevention in your neighbourhood with Safe City Mississauga, Peel Regional Police, the City of Mississauga and many other agencies!

Please Note: This volunteer opportunity is for Mississauga residents.
Safe City Mississauga is a non-profit organization that serves the City of Mississauga. Team Leads support a Neighbourhood Watch on their own street. We’re looking for local volunteers who want to help build safety and connection right where they live.


Description

The Neighbourhood Watch Team Lead will be responsible for the following:

1. Canvassing and Recruitment of Neighbourhood Watch Members

o Support with notifying residents of the upcoming canvassing and identifying best ways to inform them.

o Support with identifying the best time to canvas.

o Assist in defining the boundaries of the Neighbourhood Watch area, including confirming the addresses within these boundaries.

o Lead canvassing efforts by speaking to your neighbours about joining the Neighbourhood Watch program.

o Creating canvassing summary and providing it to Neighbourhood Services Team (# of houses canvassed, # of houses joined, # of hours canvassed) & Provide feedback on canvassing challenges, opportunities, and suggestions for improvement in the canvassing summary report.

o Support with recanvassing as required.

o Maintaining, tracking, and updating Watch member lists as needed (i.e., new neighbours moving in, neighbours moving out) and communicating with the Executive Director or designee to ensure databases are current.

2. Connecting and Retaining Neighbourhood Watch Members

o Communicating with neighbours who are unable to participate on the online portal.

o Distribute available materials (e.g., flyers or handouts) to enhance awareness and encourage participation in the “Join the 4.6%” campaign within the neighbourhood.

o Liaise with Safe City Mississauga through monthly updates or check-ins to report on neighborhood engagement and crime prevention needs highlighted by residents.

3. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Audit

o Work with SCM staff to organize a CPTED for your neighbourhood.

o Help review the accompanying report.

o Maintain communication with Safe City Mississauga to monitor and follow up on long-term corrective actions identified in the CPTED report.

4. Connect Activities

o Access event planning resources and guidance available from Safe City Mississauga to ensure successful neighbourhood events.

o Organize at least one Neighbours Night Out social event per year.

o Organize at least one Operation Clean Sweep community cleanup event per year.

o Assist with promoting the citywide charity drive and gathering any donations from neighbours, ensuring all items are delivered to designated locations.

5. Volunteer Leadership

o Reach out using any communication channels (email, phone, etc.) for ongoing guidance or support when needed.

o Follow uniform and ID standards provided by Safe City Mississauga to ensure a recognizable presence in the community. Wear your Team Lead uniform including Team Lead ID and safety vest when canvassing or attending community events.

o Assist with finding a new Team Lead in the case you step down from the position.

6. Charitable Gaming Shifts

o If you’re able to dedicate time to fill a two-hour volunteer shift at the Rama Gaming House, please complete the Charitable Gaming online training. Your first shift will be a shadow shift to help you get comfortable with the role.

Those who support charitable gaming shifts also help sustain the program financially. Qualifications

1. Commitment to Community Safety

o Passionate about fostering a safe and connected community.

o Resides in the neighbourhood they will serve.

2. Strong Communication Skills

o Excellent interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with neighbours, police liaisons, and Safe City Mississauga staff.

o Comfortable speaking to groups and facilitating meetings or community events.

o Demonstrate familiarity with the Neighbourhood Watch online portal to manage neighbourhood information and communicate.

3. Organizational Skills

o Able to organize neighbourhood meetings, events, and information distribution.

o Comfortable tracking activities, incidents, and coordinating Neighbourhood Watch efforts with Safe City Mississauga.

o Event planning experience an asset.

4. Leadership Ability

o Motivates and supports community members to actively participate in Neighbourhood Watch activities.

o Proactively identifies and addresses community safety concerns with a problem-solving approach.

o Attend training sessions provided by Safe City Mississauga on topics such as CPTED, canvassing techniques, and crime prevention strategies.

5. Basic Technological Proficiency

o Familiar with basic computer and mobile applications to communicate with neighbours, track activity, and submit reports as required.

6. Trustworthiness and Dependability

o Acts as a reliable point of contact for the neighbourhood and demonstrates integrity and confidentiality in handling information.

o Police Records Check (Level 2) required.

7. Availability

o Willing to dedicate a minimum number of hours monthly to Neighbourhood Watch activities, meetings, and community engagement.

8. Teamwork and Collaboration

o Works effectively with Safe City Mississauga staff, law enforcement, and fellow community members to ensure the success of the Neighbourhood Watch program.

o Displays flexibility and resiliency in a changing environment Adapt to evolving crime prevention or community needs to effectively support neighbourhood safety.

Training

Safe City Mississauga provides a no-cost, two-hour onboarding and training session to ensure you’re fully prepared for your role as a Neighbourhood Watch Team Lead. During the training, you’ll learn all about the Neighbourhood Watch program, your specific responsibilities, available resources, crime prevention strategies, and how to succeed in your role. We’ll also provide you with your uniform vest, Team Lead ID, and some exclusive Safe City swag to help you feel part of the team from day one!
