Position Overview

Together Project, a MakeWay Charitable Society Initiative, is in a growth phase and is seeking new members to join its Steering Committee. We are looking for strategic thinkers and team players that are passionate about building welcoming communities and ensuring the impact and sustainability of Together Project.

About Together Project

Together Project connects refugee newcomers and volunteers to build stronger, more integrated communities. Our Welcome Group Program matches volunteers with newly arrived refugees and refugee claimants for 3-6 months of social and integration support. With guidance from Together Project staff, volunteers help newcomers overcome challenges to their integration such as practicing English, navigating services like healthcare, finding a job, engaging in education, or building social networks. The ultimate goal is the empowerment of newcomers to make progress towards their individual goals, and to provide a platform for the community to engage in that process. Together Project originated in Toronto, Ontario, and has recently expanded nationally, with additional staff and programs in British Columbia, Manitoba, and New Brunswick. Together Project is a charitable initiative on the MakeWay Shared Platform.

Together Project’s Steering Committee

All Projects on the MakeWay Shared Platform have a volunteer Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is an advisory group to both the Project and the MakeWay Senior Management Team. Although the Steering Committee has no legal or governing authority, it plays an important role in ensuring Project accountability. It also contributes to the Project’s health and success by sharing its experience, leadership, and technical expertise. Members join for a three-year term with an option to renew.

In addition, volunteer Steering Committee members may be asked to participate in special projects as their time allows. Participation in meetings can be in-person and/or virtual.

    MakeWay Charitable Society

MakeWay’s Board of Directors has full governing authority, and full legal and fiduciary responsibility for the activities of Together Project. The MakeWay Board of Directors and Senior Management Team are responsible for establishing and maintaining operational systems to ensure:

    • Project activities are conducted in compliance with a wide set of employment, corporate, fundraising, and tax regulations.
    • Project finances are managed effectively.
    • The Board of Directors and Senior Management Team sets, and may amend, policies and procedures that govern Together Project e.g. administration of grants, financial management, risk management, legal and regulatory compliance, fundraising, and administration of personnel.
