Goal

To reduce social isolation and promote meaningful inclusion for people living with epilepsy by building supportive, one-to-one volunteer partnerships that foster independence, strengthen confidence, and encourage lasting social connection within the community.

Description

With the support of a seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Epilepsy South Central Ontario is proud to launch EPI Buddy, a community-based program designed to build meaningful, lasting connections for people living with epilepsy.

EPI Buddy pairs compassionate volunteers with individuals living with epilepsy to provide companionship and personalized support through regular one-on-one visits. The program is designed to reduce social isolation, strengthen inclusion, and support participants in engaging more confidently in their communities while maintaining independence, dignity, and choice.

Each participant’s interests and goals fully guide activities and may include going for walks, running errands, enjoying social outings, or participating in recreational and community activities. Each match is thoughtfully made based on shared interests, compatibility, and location to help ensure a positive and meaningful connection.

Matches are carefully arranged with volunteers who live close to the participant’s home, school, or workplace. Visits typically take place 1–2 times per month for one to two hours at a mutually convenient location, making it a low-commitment and flexible volunteer opportunity.

Many EPI Buddy matches naturally grow into lasting friendships. To support meaningful connections, factors such as age, gender, interests, and travel distance are considered during the matching process. While matches are intended to last a minimum of six months, the time commitment is light and flexible, with the hope that connections may continue and evolve over time.

Benefits

Why Volunteer as an EPI Buddy?

Volunteering as an EPI Buddy offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the life of someone living with epilepsy while building a genuine one-on-one connection.

This role goes beyond volunteering — it is about companionship, inclusion, and helping someone feel more connected and supported within their community.

Volunteers gain valuable experience in community support, disability inclusion, and person-centred engagement. This role helps develop communication skills, empathy, leadership, and confidence. It is especially valuable for individuals interested in healthcare, social services, education, or community work.

Additional benefits include:

  • Ongoing training and dedicated support
  • Flexible scheduling to fit your availability
  • Meaningful opportunities for community involvement
  • The chance to build lasting friendships and connections
  • Reimbursement of the Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) and coverage of Standard First Aid & CPR C with AED certification after six months of participation in the program

Most importantly, volunteers experience the personal reward of helping reduce social isolation and promote independence for individuals in their community, while also gaining a deeper sense of purpose, connection, and personal growth.

Training

All prospective volunteers will take part in an initial interview as part of the selection process to ensure the program is a strong and appropriate match for both the volunteer and the individuals we support.

Successful applicants will then be invited to attend a mandatory in-person orientation and training session. This session will be held in the Port Credit area and is designed to provide volunteers with the knowledge, tools, and confidence needed to succeed as an EPI Buddy.

During the orientation, volunteers will also receive education about epilepsy, including an overview of what epilepsy is, how it may affect individuals differently, and practical guidance on how to respond supportively and appropriately in a community setting. This training is designed to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and help volunteers feel prepared and confident in their role.

The orientation also covers key expectations of the program, best practices for building respectful one-on-one relationships, and strategies for fostering safe, inclusive, and meaningful community connections.
