Goal

The Region of Peel serves more than 1.4 million residents in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon. Our 20-year vision for Peel is Community for Life. Located in the heart of a well-established residential community known as Park Royal, Sheridan Villa (LTC) has more than 40 years of experience in caring for the Peel community. Sheridan Villa been recently renovated into a 142-bed modern home for residents and 'Adult Day Service' clients. Our volunteers enjoy the vital role of enhancing seniors' living in many ways within the facility, plus helping them connect to the local community.As COVID-19 restrictions gradually ease, the Region of Peel has begun a return of volunteers to 'in person' volunteering opportunities, and Sheridan Villa invites YOU to return to (or newly experience) the pleasure of assisting resident seniors at that LTC facility. Description

Participate in a variety of programs and services at Sheridan Villa, including:

  • ACTIVATION PROGRAMS: Assisting residents attending various programs including bingo, music, trivia, baking, crafts, games, gardening, etc.
  • GENERAL STORE: Selling basic items and snacks to residents/clients/family members and visitors
  • DINING SUPPORT: Assisting residents/clients at meal times
  • OUTINGS: Accompanying residents/clients attending group outings such as shopping and bowling
  • FRIENDLY VISITS: Interacting with residents one on one and supporting them in a activities such as reading, writing and games

Long Term Care Centre Volunteers ensure that each resident/client is treated with respect and dignity and that his/her choices and preferences are considered and respected at all times. Volunteers provide Supervisors, Activation, and Volunteer Services with information on a regular basis (residents visited, participation level and length of visit).

Qualifications

  • Minimum Age - 14
  • Minimum volunteering commitment - 60 hours (more than 6 months) > see TIME COMMITMENT, below
  • Solid oral/written English language skills (fluency in additional languages is welcome)
  • Committed to meaningful interaction with older adults (empathy, patience, appreciation of 'special needs')
  • Must provide a clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check (form provided by Volunteer Resources)
  • Must undergo TB test with negative result
  • Proof of Vaccination (including 'booster' shot)
  • Ability to volunteer collaboratively as part of a team and independently
  • Committed to compliance with Peel LTC facilities' policies and procedures (incl. any COVID-19 protocols/precautions)

FLEXIBLE, subject to Sheridan Villa program schedules and residents' needs. Please be prepared for weekly commitments.
Long Term (more than 6 months): Commitment of 60 hours MINIMUM is required to qualify for this role.

ORIENTATION provided, as well as focused TRAINING when you are in the 'role'
