Goal

Elder Help-Peel in 2022 will celebrate 25 years of care and service to Seniors in Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon. As a not-for-profit organization with charity status, we continue to provide excellent information, education and supportive services to diverse elderly persons residing in Peel region. These services are critical in helping shape the community as the population ages so that seniors continue to be valued and relevant in our community.

Among our Education, Consultation, and Active Living services, a key 'role' within our programs/outreaches is Friendly Caller/Visitor Volunteer, and over the years we have enjoyed invaluable contributions by many dedicated, dynamic, quality volunteers with a wide variety of ages, backgrounds, and talents. As we prepare to emerge from the COVID-19 Pandemic, Elder Help-Peel is renewing recruitment for this 'position'. This is a rare opportunity for a caring volunteer among older adults who has the vision and commitment to make a real, lasting difference in the community, one-to-one!



Description

As a Friendly Caller/Visitor Volunteer, you will take on a very active 'role' that includes:

  • After acceptance as a volunteer, being 'matched' to elderly clients, with appropriate introduction(s) arranged and supervised by Elder Help-Peel
  • Comprehensive orientation/training for the 'role' (see TRAINING, below)
  • Arranging a weekly schedule for visits (preferably 'in person', but may be by phone or otherwise 'virtual', having regard to COVID-19 restrictions, health, and safety) see TIME COMMITMENT, below
  • Once 'matched', following a routine, including confirming a ONE-HOUR session by telephone with the client the day before
  • As meetings progress, building a supportive relationship with your 'match' (conversation/enquiry/joining in social activities that may include games and perhaps reminiscing, as you listen attentively)
  • Ongoing assessment of the health of the client, and reporting any concerns our Client Services Coordinator
  • Keeping the 'Friendly Visiting Monthly Service Record' up to date (logging your volunteer hours, case notes and other entries)
  • Being a representative of Elder Help-Peel (the face of) 'in the field', abiding by and reflecting our Vision, Mission, and policies/procedures

PLEASE NOTE: When 'in person' visits resume, Elder Help-Peel will require that both our clients and our visiting volunteers be fully vaccinated, for the protection of all.

Qualifications

  • MINIMUM Age - 19 (this 'position' is not available to secondary school students)
  • Note: Student practicum/co-op placements are not offered through this volunteer 'position'/engagement
  • You are passionate about supporting Seniors in your community, and you desire to keep them 'connected' by helping them overcome feelings of 'isolation'
  • Proficiency in English (fluency in other languages is both welcome and an asset)
  • Experience working or volunteering in the healthcare industry, hospitals, long term care homes, Seniors social clubs, and nonprofit organizations also is an asset
  • Availability for the duration of the expected volunteering engagement: MORE than 6 MONTHS, preferably 8+ MONTHS (incl. mandatory orientation/training)
  • You are friendly, able to 'connect' virtually and/in 'in person' with client(s) 'matched' to you
  • Being a good listener, patient, caring, and able to appreciate Seniors' 'special needs' are valuable assets
  • Committed to adhere strictly to an agreed weekly volunteering schedule
  • Adherence to any COVID-19 health & safety protocols, plus compliance with Elder Help-Peel policies/procedures (incl. confidentiality)
  • Complete volunteer screening/application forms
  • Attend an online interview
  • Because you will interact with Seniors, a Police Vulnerable Sector Check is REQUIRED

SCREENING of applicants will be 'virtual' (remote): Telephone/Email/Online interviewing. Be sure to provide your RESUME (see DESCRIPTION, above). After you apply, as a precaution, monitor your 'Junk/Spam' email folders and leave space on your voicemail for communications from Elder Help-Peel.

Training

MANDATORY - Scheduling of sessions ('virtual' and/or in person, when permitted) will be arranged with successful applicants. Elder Help-Peel is committed to provided ongoing training and support to our volunteers.
