Goal

Community Living Mississauga (CLM) is a large nonprofit charitable organization that supports over 3,000 people who have intellectual disabilities. Our vision is that all people will live in a state of dignity and respect and share in all elements of living in a community that is welcoming, accepting and inclusive of all individuals. 

Our mission is to provide support to people who have an intellectual disability to ensure their quality of life in the community is meaningfully improved.Spend 12 weeks with purpose by meaningfully improving the quality of life of an adult who has an intellectual disability. Volunteers will be matched with an adult to pursue mutual leisure and recreational interests for a period of 12 weeks. The position's goals are to reduce social isolation, explore new interests, and improve the quality of life of a person with an intellectual disability. 


Description

Once a week from May to August, at a mutually agreeable time, volunteers will meet with a pre-assigned person to enjoy an activity of mutual interest to both parties for 12 weeks. Any costs associated with admission fees will be covered.  Meetings and activities are expected to last 1-2 hours and may take place on weekdays, weeknights, or weekends. Volunteers will be introduced to their respective matches before the start of the 12-week engagement. Some of the things that you can anticipate doing with your match include going out for coffee, bowling, watching a movie, attending a community play, going for a walk in the park, attending a special event in Mississauga, etc.

You will enjoy weekly, ongoing support from Community Living Mississauga employees when needed, AND you will perform program evaluations to gauge success after 6 weeks of volunteering, and at the end of 12 weeks.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Age -18
  • Volunteering commitment (12 weeks)
  • You are a friendly volunteer with an interest in improving the quality of life of a person who has an intellectual disability
  • Add to that, you're thoughtful and empathetic, with an ability to motivate and encourage
  • You come with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • You're prepared to adhere strictly to CLM's policies and procedures 
  • Above all, you believe in and are committed to the value of inclusion for all
  • PLEASE NOTE: Because the position involves close personal interaction with a person who is vulnerable, a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check is required. Community Living Mississauga is prepared to reimburse the cost of a Vulnerable Sector Police Check at the successful completion of this volunteer

FLEXIBLE: At mutually convenient times for you and the person you are matched with, volunteer 1-2 hours during each week of your engagement. (Accordingly, the volunteer is anticipated to support the 'matched adult' by meeting weekly for 12 weeks.). 


Training

Attend an ORIENTATION & TRAINING session where you will be given all the information you will need to make this a successful volunteer experience.
