Goal

Start2Finish provides access to enrichment literacy and well-being supports to marginalized elementary school-aged children living in poverty/deprivation within Canada.


Description

Our in-person Running & Reading Club happens once a week after school at partner elementary schools. The program is targeted for students in grades 1-6 and is free of cost. The goal of the program is to increase physical activity and literacy levels amongst students to set them up for success as they graduate into middle/high school and beyond. The program is 2 hours long and includes a warm up, running workout, stretching, games, a healthy snack, word of the day and reading/journal time. The students are working towards an end of year 5km race & reading challenge.

Qualifications

  • Genuine interest in supporting and mentoring children in grades 1-6.
  • Ability to actively participate in and lead running and fitness activities.
  • Ability to assist children with reading activities, including one-on-one reading sessions.
  • Clear and effective verbal communication.
  • Patience in working with children of varying skill levels and learning style
  • Punctuality and consistency in attendance.
  • Commitment to the program schedule and the children you will be working with.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with program staff and other volunteers.

Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment starting 2024-10-03 AND ending 2025-05-29
Shifts are available on the following days
 - Tuesday Afternoon, Wednesday Afternoon, Thursday Afternoon

  • St. Louis Elementary School, Tuesdays 3:00-5:00pm
  • St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Elementary, Thursdays 3:30-5:30pm
  • St. Raymond Elementary School, Wednesdays 3:00-5:00pm
  • St. Valentine Elementary School, Tuesdays 3:00-5:00pm
  • St. Alfred Separate School, Wednesdays 3:15-5:15pm

(In addition there is 20-30 minutes program prep review the weekly session activities, and arrival 10 minutes before the shift and 15 minutes after the program for dismissal and clean up)


Training

Orientation about Start2Finish and training for the volunteer position will be provided.
