Goal

COSTI empowers individuals from diverse communities to succeed and achieve their full potential by providing educational, employment and social services. We are currently seeking volunteers to support our ESL (English as a Second Language) program. This program is designed to equip newcomers with the English language skills they need to thrive in the Canadian job market and community. We will be running three program sessions throughout the Winter, Spring, and Summer. Due to the large classroom size of approximately 30 students per teacher, volunteer support will enhance the student learning. In-person and online volunteer support is needed.

    Description

    We are looking for volunteers who want to assist the teachers with the following tasks: 

    • Assist ESL instructors with class activities, group discussions, and individual tasks in online and/or in-person settings.
    • Support students by clarifying instructions, offering language practice, and providing constructive feedback on assignments.
    • Facilitate small group activities or conversation practice sessions to boost student confidence and engagement.
    • Encourage and motivate learners, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for language development.
    • Help with basic technical support for online classes only, ensuring students can access digital learning tools and resources.

    Qualifications

    Proficiency in English (CLB Level 6) is a requirement for the position. Other nice-to-haves consist of: experience working with non-native speakers, comfortable with Microsoft Teams for online classes, and patience, empathy, plus strong interpersonal skills would be ideal.

    Time Commitment
    This is a Any Duration commitment starting 2025-01-06 AND ending 2025-08-01
    Shifts are available Anytime

    Schedule:

    Programming starts in January and finishes in August. However, there are 3 sessions:

    • Cycle A: January 6 - March 28, 2025 (12 weeks)
    • Cycle B: April 1 - June 23, 2025 (12 weeks)
    • Cycle C: June 30 - August 1, 2025 (5 weeks)

    There are Monday to Friday, daytime or evening, volunteer options.


    Training

    COSTI provides orientation and on-the-job training.
